Welcome back to the weekly Observer here on Heart of Ohio Sports.
The playoff picture is becoming clearer, league races are heating up, and the weather is turning cool. That can only mean that it's October football.
As I mentioned last week, we're going to start giving you an idea of where everyone stands when it comes to the playoff spots. Remember, the top 16 teams in each region make the playoffs and the top 8 host in the first round. If you're one of the top four teams in a region, you can host two playoff games if you win in Week 11.
I was able to see Calvert play Lucas last week and I'll get into that in a minute, but man were the Senecas impressive.
Without any further babbling, here's a look at our local teams:
The Tornadoes have taken a wrong turn on the track this season with a third consecutive loss. What stands out to me is the defense, or lack thereof. Columbian has allowed 51, 38, and 41 points the last three weeks. You're not going to win too many games doing that. TC started the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division off with a loss to Sandusky last week, 41-13. Now, the Blue Streaks have picked it up with three straight wins, but you've got to be a little more competitive in a game like that at home. Zach Shawberry was just 8-of-15 for 62 yards with an interception against Sandusky while Masen Seitz ran 13 times for 51 yards. As well as the defense, Columbian has got to find some offense over the last few weeks of the regular season if it even wants to compete in some tough games coming up. For the season, Shawberry is 63-of-116 passing for 666 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. Seitz paces the team with 77 attempts for 414 yards and three scores. Columbian hits the road this week with a contest against Clyde. I was there last Friday when Clyde really played well against Perkins, but couldn't sustain it in the second half in a 28-7 loss. Leading the Fliers is quarterback Brennan Wilson, who is 55-of-80 passing with 800 yards and nine touchdowns. Clyde will move Wilson around the field and when he's not taking snaps, Jonathan Lantz will get in there and he's 31-of-49 for 342 yards and five TDs.
Current playoff positioning: 16th in Division III, Region 10
Up next: at Clyde (4-2)
As I mentioned up above, I stopped by Frost-Kalnow with my son Saturday to watch Calvert... dismantle Lucas. I'll be honest. I thought it was 50-50 going in, but I was... wrong. The Senecas got a big turnover on downs defensively on the first drive of the game and were in control throughout. I was super impressed with freshman quarterback Tucker Coleman, who was 12-of-16 for 184 yards and three touchdowns (I'd like to take this time to point out Coleman's two best games this year have been with me watching... just saying!). Cal Warnament added 17 rushes for 68 yards and a touchdown as Calvert put the game into a running clock. Coleman is up to 48-of-88 passing for 654 yards this season while Warnament has run 132 times for 651 yards and seven touchdowns. Calvert is also on the road this week as it travels to the Duck Pond to take on a tough Margaretta team. Don't let the 1-5 record fool you. The Polar Bears are tough and have their toughest and probably best player back in Judah Keller. Margaretta has struggled to keep quarterbacks healthy this season as five different kids - including Keller - have thrown a pass for the Polar Bears. Keep something in mind and that is that Margaretta led Hopewell-Loudon 7-0 in the third quarter last week before H-L scored twice. The Polar Bears are tough, so this is no gimme game for Calvert... unless I'm wrong again.
Current playoff positioning: 5th in Division VII, Region 26
Up next: at Margaretta (1-5)
As I just mentioned, the Chieftains trailed 7-0 in the third quarter at Margaretta last week before getting things around and winning 16-7. The weather and torrential downpour surely affected both teams, but it was Hopewell-Loudon that figured it out first. The Chieftains used its tough ground game to beat Margaretta as Braylon Martinez ran 22 times for 110 yards and both touchdowns while Kellen Frankart added 15 rushes for 105 yards. There wasn't a whole lot of passing for H-L last week. H-L is ranked No. 3 in the state in Division VI and the Chieftains fit the bill. For the season, Jacoby Ellis has completed 65-of-103 passes for 774 yards and five touchdowns while Martinez has amassed 553 yards on 88 carries for nine scores. The Chieftains get a home game against Willard this week before an open date. Willard is led by its passing game as freshman Ben Rothhaar has completed 114-of-180 passes for 1,534 yards and 15 touchdowns. His top target is Paxton Flores, who has caught 41 passes for 610 yards and nine scores. Willard's defense is quite unique. The Crimson Flashes have only allowed a total of 57 yards passing in six games, but have been torched for 1,598 yards rushing and that includes just 20 yards in Week 1. Meaning, Willard has allowed 1,578 yards rushing over the last five games, or almost 316 yards per contest. Have at it, Hopewell-Loudon.
Current playoff positioning: 1st in Division VI, Region 22
Up next: vs. Willard (2-4)
The Tigers squeaked out a close, 14-7 win over Upper Sandusky last week. Seneca East scored 34 or more points in four of its first five games, but got a tough, close win. The Tigers' two losses this season have come to state-ranked teams in Monroeville and Gibsonburg. Seneca East's offense is led by Nicholas Parks, who has completed 89-of-147 passes for 1,540 yards and 17 touchdowns. Taylor Young has emerged as the top receiver with 38 receptions for 742 yards and 10 scores. Bryler Beamer is a great option as well with 31 catches for 510 yards and four TDs. Business is about to pick up for Seneca East this week as the Tigers host Colonel Crawford in a key Northern 10 Athletic Conference contest. The Eagles' only loss was to Mohawk and have to have this one if they want to even have a chance to win the league title. There's no secret what Colonel Crawford wants to do and that's run the ball. The Eagles have racked up 165 carries for 1,620 yards and 28 touchdowns. Leading Colonel Crawford is Connor McMichael, who has 55 rushes for 728 yards and 12 scores. Seneca East has a chance to pick up some massive playoff points and keep itself in the league race.
Current playoff positioning: 7th in Division VI, Region 22
Up next: vs. Colonel Crawford (5-1)
Hear what coach Ed Phillips had to say about this matchup as we sat down with him this past Tuesday at Benchwarmers in Tiffin for the Coaches Corner, you can watch the full interview here:
Things kept rolling for the Warriors as they took care of business again, pounding Buckeye Central, 48-0. Mohawk has won its last two games by a combined total of 111-0. There was no letdown after the beatdown of Colonel Crawford. The Warriors will again be favorites this week as they travel to Wynford, a team that has just one win (although it's over a team that enters this week 5-1). Ben Bogner is up to 69-of-108 passes for 1,201 yards and 18 touchdowns while running 64 times for 432 yards and four touchdowns. Kahne Hayman continues to be the top target with 35 receptions for 656 yards and nine scores. Coaches never look ahead, but we can as media. If Mohawk gets by Wynford, the Warriors will host Upper Sandusky and Carey before traveling to Seneca East in Week 10. Mohawk has set itself up to play in some massive games the last few weeks of the season. The Warriors are also being acknowledged in the state football poll. Mohawk has been extremely good since the season-opening loss to Calvert. Could those two meet in a rematch in the playoffs?
Current playoff positioning: 6th in Division VII, Region 26
Up next: at Wynford (1-5)

The games are picked through a combination of analysis, rankings, competitiveness, and statistics. If you’d like us to cover your region, please contact us at heartofohiosports.com. Any recruiting rankings are from 247sports.com.
We’ll start with the local games first…
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Western Reserve defeated St. Paul at home, 28-7; Monroeville won at New London, 71-0.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 29, 2023; Monroeville won at Western Reserve, 44-36.
Intrigue: The winner controls their own destiny in the Firelands Conference title race. Both teams are 3-0 in the conference.
Western Reserve QB Hayden Keith was 13-of-15 for 198 yards passing with 74 rushing yards and two TDs last week. Hayden Dobias had nine catches for 79 yards.
Monroeville set a school record with 71 points scored last week. This is the toughest remaining opponent remaining on the Eagles’ schedule. They appear locked for a playoff berth and a home game to boot, but this one is for the Firelands.
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Colonel Crawford won at Bucyrus, 58-6; Seneca East beat Upper Sandusky at home, 14-7.
Previous Meeting: Oct. 27, 2023; Colonel Crawford beat Seneca East at home in the first round of the Region 22 playoffs, 24-16.
Intrigue: Colonel Crawford’s Brayden Holt completed 4-of-5 passes for 72 yards and had two carries for 93 yards and two TDs last week. Conor McMichael had a couple carries for 119 yards with two TDs, and Avery Powers rushed for 35 yards on six attempts and two TDs.
Colonel Crawford is a lock for the Region 22 playoffs, but if they want to clinch a home game then they’re going to have to win out.
Seneca East controls their own destiny for a share of the Northern 10 Conference title with current front runner N10 leader, Mohawk, still on the schedule in Week 10.
Nicholas Parks was 9-of-16 for 176 yards, two TDs, an INT, and rushed for 73 yards last week. Taylor Young caught six passes for 140 yards with two TDs.
The Tigers’ defense gave up 147 passing yards and 132 rushing yards in last week’s victory. They were able to intercept two passes and recover a fumble.
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Clay defeated Bowling Green at home, 24-22; Fremont Ross beat Napoleon at home, 26-20.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 29, 2023; Fremont Ross won at Clay, 41-28.
Intrigue: The winner controls their own destiny in the Cardinal Division of the Northern Lakes League.
Clay’s Mason Heintschel, a Pitt commit, threw two TD passes last week. Landon Eversman had an 14-yard TD run. Troy Hazuda had an 11-yard TD reception, and Brayden Schultz caught a three-yard TD also.
The Eagles are likely in the playoffs already. However, they need to win out to guarantee a home first-round playoff game.
Fremont Ross’ Karson Kayden threw a passing TD to Bryce Shiets in last week’s win. Tallon Brown and Elijah Ysaguirre rushed for a TD, and Jadrian Brown took a punt return to the house.
Like Clay, the Little Giants need to win out for any shot at a home playoff game.
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Pandora-Gilboa won at Elmwood, 34-0; Liberty-Benton won at Arlington, 28-0.
Previous Meeting: Oct. 6, 2023; Liberty-Benton won at Pandora-Gilboa, 33-28.
Intrigue: The winner walks away as the leader of the Blanchard Valley Conference.
Pandora-Gilboa had a well-balance attack against Elmwood last week. They gained 283 total yards with 142 through the air and 141 on the ground. P-G was also 7-of-14 on third downs in the contest.
Defensively, the Rockets held their opponent to negative-19 yards rushing and 59 yards passing for only 40 total yards given up. The defense picked off two passes, and did not allow Elmwood to get a single third down conversion.
Liberty-Benton rushed for 201 yards last week. Zach Elchert rushed for 96 yards and a TD on 19 attempts, Austin Colbert had 13 carries for 73 yards and a TD.
The Eagle defense held Arlington to 30 yards of offense.
L-B is already locked-in for the playoffs so this game is purely for the BVC title for them.
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Perkins defeated Clyde at home, 28-7; Edison won at Bellevue, 21-6.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 29, 2023; Perkins defeated Edison at home, 49-14.
Intrigue: Perkins’ Sam Schweinfurth completed 8-of-13 passes for 161 yards. Michigan State commit Braylon Collier had 39 receiving yards, 31 passing yards, intercepted a pass, and punted for a 53-yard average in last week’s win.
Edison’s Cyrus Finnen had 22 rushes for 97 yards and a TD to lead the way for an offense that rushed for 262 yards. They also passed for 49 yards to gain a total of 311 yards last week.
The Chargers held Bellevue to 92 total yards: 37 yards passing with 55 rushing. The defense also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass last week.
Honorable Mention - Vermilion (5-1) @ Port Clinton (2-4) and Calvert (4-2) @ Margaretta (1-5)
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Fairland beat South Point, 36-0; Portsmouth won at Chesapeake, 45-8.
Previous Meeting: Oct. 27, 2023; Portsmouth won at Fairland in the first round of the Region 19 playoffs, 50-38.
Intrigue: Fairland gained 280 of their 289 total yards on the ground last week. Jack Hayden gained 165 yards and two TDs on seven rushes.
The Dragons held South Point to a mere 26 rushing yards, 82 passing yards, and 108 total yards. The defense had an interception, and held their opponent to a 1-of-9 third down conversion rate.
Like Fairland, the majority of Portsmouth’s yards last week were on the ground. The offensive attack rushed for 305 of PHS’s 344 offensive yards. However, they did giveaway two fumbles.
The Trojan defense gave up 29 yards rushing and 100 yards passing for a total of 129 offensive yards. They were able to recover a fumble as well last week.
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Elder lost to St. Xavier at home, 22-17; Moeller won at La Salle, 38-0.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 29, 2023; Moeller won at Elder, 38-7.
Intrigue: Elder QB Kaden Estep completed 13-of-21 passes for 194 yards, a TD, and a pick. Christopher Paff caught three passes for 66 yards and a TD.
The Panther defense was led by Joey DiTullio who had five tackles, one TFL, and a 74-yard pick-six.
Moeller’s Matt Ponatoski was 19-of-23 for 228 passing yards and three TDs. Matthew Fogler caught three balls for 86 yards and a couple TDs.
The Crusader defense held La Salle to just 46 rushing yards and 96 passing yards for 142 yards total. They held their opponent to 2-of-11 on third down conversions and 0-of-2 on fourth down conversions too.
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Nordonia beat Twinsburg at home, 40-14; Wadworth beat Hudson at home in overtime, 21-14.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 29, 2023; Wadworth won at Nordonia, 55-14.
Intrigue: The winner controls their destiny in the National Conference of the Suburban League.
Nordonia QB Ben Chesser rushed for 116 yards and three TDs while also going 7-of-12 for 71 passing yards last week. The offense gained 276 rushing yards in the win. Rocco DeLorenzo had 82 rushing yards and a TD to help the cause. Owen Smotek had a 48-yard punt return TD.
Wadsworth’s Gavin Madigan rushed for 70 yards, caught a pass for nine yards, ran-in a two-point conversion, and had a 29-yard interception return last week. Bryan Hall was 9-of-14 for 122 yards with a rushing and passing TD. Jacob Earnest had three receptions for 75 yards.
The Grizzlies defense held Hudson to 25 rushing yards in the game.
This is arguably the toughest opponent either team has faced all season.
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Liberty beat Coffman at home, 19-15; Upper Arlington won at Hilliard Bradley, 42-0.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 29, 2023; Liberty beat Upper Arlington at home in overtime, 19-16.
Intrigue: Two teams vying for a Ohio Capital Conference - Central Division title.
Liberty plays one of the toughest schedules in the state. There’s a good chance the Patriots will earn two home playoff games to start the postseason.
Upper Arlington has a tough four-game stretch to end the season with Liberty, Olentangy Orange Coffman, and Davidson remaining. The Golden Bears are going to have to play some top notch football to get a home playoff game.
When: Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Hoban defeated Mt. Vernon [IL] at home, 56-13; Walsh Jesuit won at Benedictine, 20-12.
Previous Meeting: Nov. 17, 2023; Hoban defeated Walsh Jesuit at University of Akron InfoCision Stadium in the Region 5 finals, 30-6.
Intrigue: Hoban gained 355 yards of offense last week. Three-hundred forty-nine of those were on the ground. Brayton Feister had three rushes for 103 yards with three TDs. La'Near Folk carried the ball four times for 94 yards and a TD.
The Knights play one of the toughest schedules in Division II. They’re going to have to continue their elite play to guarantee two playoff games at home.
Walsh’s Marty Tobin had 30 carries for 211 yards. Quarterback Keller Moten threw for 92 yards and rushed for 76 yards with two TDs.
This is arguably the toughest opponent that Walsh will face in the regular season.
Honorable Mention - Football North [ON (4-1)] @ Massillon (4-2) and Bishop Hartley (3-3) @ Columbus St. Francis DeSales (5-1)
