TIFFIN — Calvert put together their best game of the season Saturday night against Lucas. The  Senecas were dominant against the Cubs in a 35-0 win at Frost-Kalnow Stadium.

What did coach think?

“We clicked on all-cylinders,” Calvert coach Mike Lento said. “We stuck to our game plan that we worked on all week. Our guys showed up. They played together, and they executed it to the best of our abilities.”

The first half...

On the opening drive of the game, the Cubs were able to pick up a couple first downs before the Seneca defense were able to force a turnover-on-downs at the Calvert 37.

Later in the quarter, Calvert quarterback Tucker Coleman threw a short screen pass to the right to John Schumacher, who took it to the house for a 56-yard score. Cameron Lucius’ PAT was good, and Calvert was up 7-0.

On the ensuing drive, the Seneca defense was able to force another turnover-on-downs when they stuffed a run by run inside by Lucas’ Dan Hockensmith on a fourth-and-one at midfield.

With 7:00 remaining in the first half, Calvert had a 14-0 lead.

On a third-and-10 from their own 26 on the Cubs’ next possession, QB Bobby Grover’s pass was intercepted by Xavier Kimmet.

Coleman pump faked a screen pass, and then tossed a deep pass to the right sideline to a wide open Kimmet for a 39-yard TD.

Calvert’s defense gave up a couple first downs on the next drive before forcing Lucas to commit a third tunrover-on-downs on the night.

The Senecas took a 21-0 lead into halftime.

The second half...

On Lucas’ next possession, Grover threw another interception to Kimmet, giving the Senecas the ball in their opponent’s territory.

Two plays later, Lucius ran the ball up the middle, broke multiple tackles, and carried multiple defenders with him as he willed himself to pay dirt from 20 yards out.

Coach Lento on Calvert's offensive performance...

“You know, it's funny,” Coach Lento said. “We want to say that we got to KISS it, right? Keep It Simple, Stupid, and we were able to do that in the passing game. We were able to take advantage of some coverages that we liked, and Tucker Coleman did a great job this evening.”

Some more stats...

Carter Cook and Logan DeMoss led the Calvert defense with seven tackles each.

Lucas had nine first downs on 133 yards of offense. All of it rushing.

Grover was 1-of-5 for zero yards and two TDs. Hockensmith had 12 rushes for 44 yards to lead the way for Lucas.

Lento on the Seneca's defensive performance...

“Anytime you can put a goose egg up, it's great.,” Lento added. “Our defense has been playing lights out. So we got to make sure we're going to keep doing that. But even what's more impressive is when we're able to put some backups in there at the end of the game and we're able to still hold the goose egg up.

That's pride. That's tradition. That's culture, and we're going to keep keep doing that here at Calvert.”

The Cubs won the possession battle by keeping the ball for 26:12 compared to Calvert’s 19:53.

Calvert travels next to Margaretta (1-5), and Lucas (3-3) hosts Amanda-Clearcreek (3-3) next Friday.
