Welcome back to another edition of the Heart of Ohio Sports Observer.
Week 10, we're here.
Wasn't it just like five minutes ago when it was a chilly 66 degrees and rainy in Sycamore when Mohawk hosted Calvert to open the 2025 regular season? It sure seems like it.
With the cool weather we've had in the past few days, I'd take 66 degrees at kickoff. It'll be cooler than that this week as we march toward the end of October and into November soon.
All five of the HOOS teams have a shot at playoff berths. Hopewell-Loudon, Mohawk and Seneca East have clinched spots while Columbian and Calvert need to win this week and get some help to qualify.
Just a reminder that just the top 12 teams in each region make the playoffs this year, as opposed to 16 the last few years. If you're one of the top 4 seeds, you'll get a bye in Week 11 and host a playoff game in Week 12.
Check out each entry to see where the five HOOS teams sit in their playoff regions ahead of Week 10.

Here's a look at the five Heart of Ohio Sports teams, starting with Columbian.
After a home loss to Bellevue in Week 8, the Tornadoes needed a thundering response. Columbian got it when it pounded Clyde 49-20 last week. The Fliers had won their last two games entering Week 9, but the Tornadoes dominated from start to finish. Logan Gooding tied a school record with six touchdown passes against Clyde, completing 14 of 21 passes for 221 yards. The Tornadoes also got Masen Seitz back in a big way as he ran 28 times for 126 yards. Blake Miller had three receptions for 57 yards and three touchdowns while Dashawn Russell hauled in five passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. The win was big for Columbian as it keeps the Tornadoes tied atop the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division with Perkins. More on the Pirates in a second. For the season, Gooding is 120 of 201 passing for 1,700 yards, 21 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Seitz is up to 85 carries for 378 yards and three touchdowns after missing about half of the regular season. Johnny Bremyer leads the receivers with 42 catches for 696 yards and nine touchdowns while Russell has 28 receptions for 330 yards and six touchdowns. Columbian hosts Perkins on Friday for the outright SBC Lake Division championship. The Pirates started 1-3 amidst a tough schedule, injuries and suspensions. Since then, Perkins has won five straight games by a combined score of 233-29. Sam Schweinfurth has completed 130 of 195 passes for 1,993 yards, 22 touchdowns and one interception (I saw it in person. The receiver slipped and defender caught it). Blake Parker is the top Perkins receiver with 56 catches for 973 yards and eight touchdowns. Braxden Martin leads the Pirates on the ground with 70 rushes for 454 yards and five touchdowns. Last year, Perkins defeated Columbian 42-7.
This week: vs. Perkins (6-3, 3-0)
Playoff position: No. 14 in Division III, Region 10
The Senecas were right there with a tough Woodmore team last week, but the Wildcats pulled out a 38-31 win. That would have been a massive win for Calvert, but instead, it probably finds itself on the outside looking in when the playoff matchups are announced Sunday. Against Woodmore, Tucker Coleman completed 23 of 37 passes for 228 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Nolan Lee didn't get much going on the ground, but scored twice amongst his 10 carries for 38 yards. Logan Demoss caught 10 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown while running five times for 45 yards. Barring a win and a playoff bid that results in an upset win, Calvert never won two straight games this year. Calvert has lost six games this year and in those, were only competitive twice. The Senecas didn't quite click this year, but have a chance to go out with a win when it hosts Willard on Friday. For the season, Coleman is 48 of 83 for 565 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions. Lee has run 140 times for 595 yards with 11 touchdowns while Demoss leads the receivers with 38 catches for 661 yards and nine touchdowns. Willard continues its spiral after winning its first two games of the season. The Crimson Flashes have lost seven games in a row, the last two after coach Bill Speller resigned following the loss to Lakota. Josh Huston has taken almost all of the snaps at quarterback after Jake Rothhaar was hurt in a Week 4 loss to Margaretta. He has completed 57 of 109 passes for 706 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions. Paxton Flores leads Willard with 35 catches for 689 yards and five touchdowns. Calvert topped Willard last season, 42-6.
This week: vs. Willard (2-7, 0-6)
Playoff position: No. 16 in Division VII, Region 26
After losing to Margaretta in Week 7, the Chieftains have bounced back with consecutive wins over Willard (54-6) in Week 8 and Northwood (42-6) last week. That's what Hopewell-Loudon needed to right the ship. Against Northwood, Jacoby Ellis completed 10 of 13 passes for 213 yards and five touchdowns while Brody Brickman ran 11 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. Four different receivers caught a touchdown pass with Jack Colatruglio leading the way with four catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Also catching touchdown passes was Brickman, Evan Eilrich and Luca SanGregory. For the season, Ellis is 85 of 122 passing for 1,190 yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions. Jaysin Cramer leads Hopewell-Loudon with 79 carries for 538 yards and seven touchdowns while Brickman is up to 62 rushes for 430 yards and seven touchdowns. Colatruglio has 29 catches for 458 yards and seven touchdowns while Brickman is right behind him with 28 receptions for 430 yards and 11 touchdowns. Woodmore has a nice offense that the Chieftains defense will have to deal with. The Wildcats were shut out by Margaretta and lost a close 14-6 decision to Gibsonburg. Outside of those two games, Woodmore has scored at least 38 points in every other game including seven games with at least 40 points. Landon Rich is the catalyst for the Wildcats' offense. He has 211 carries for 1,844 yards and 30 touchdowns. Quarterback Calvin Lipstraw has completed 55 of 97 passes for 883 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. Hopewell-Loudon defeated Woodmore last year, 57-0. I'm sure Woodmore didn't forget about that.
This week: at Woodmore (7-2, 4-2)
Playoff position: No. 3 in Division VI, Region 22
The Warriors muddled things up a bit in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference with a massive 29-28 overtime win over Carey. Mohawk trailed 28-21 in overtime when it scored. The Warriors went for the win and walked it off with a two-point conversion to stun the Blue Devils. How about that play call by Mohawk coach Eric Daniel? I don't blame him in the slightest bit. Kudos to him. Now, Mohawk (8-1, 5-1), Carey (5-4, 5-1) and Colonel Crawford (8-1, 5-1) all have one league loss. For the season, Andon Clouse has completed 77 of 118 passes for 1,449 yards, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions while running 122 times for 753 yards and 10 touchdowns. Kaden Bish leads Mohawk with 103 carries for 1,040 yards and 17 touchdowns. Either one of them could easily be the N10 Offensive Player of the Year. Brant Kirian has 32 receptions for 530 yards and six touchdowns while Levi Tiell has caught 24 passes for 657 yards and seven touchdowns. The defense has been led by Owen Patrizi, who has 104 tackles for the Warriors. Bish tops Mohawk with four sacks while Clouse has three interceptions. Mohawk has been top-notch since the close loss to Colonel Crawford. The Warriors will be in the Division VII Region 26 playoffs. With a win against Seneca East, they will have a chance at a bye. Mohawk will definitely have at least one more home game in Sycamore this season.
This week: vs. Seneca East (6-3, 4-2)
Playoff position: No. 5 in Division VI, Region 26
There was no looking ahead for the Tigers last week as they pounded Bucyrus 62-14. That's the second time Seneca East has scored 62 points in a game this year after beating Wynford 62-8. Of note, the Tigers opened the season with a 2-0 win over Ashland Crestview. It's an explosive offense over in Attica and they can put up points with the best of them. Nicholas Parks has completed 96 of 173 passes for 1,496 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions for Seneca East. Jackson Gayheart has rushed 99 times for 590 yards and six touchdowns while Parks adds 124 carries for 534 yards and six touchdowns. Ethan Shultz leads the Tigers' receivers with 23 catches for 310 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Gayheart leads the way with 83 tackles and seven interceptions. Seneca East only has eight interceptions on defense with Parks and Elijah Cline each grabbing two interceptions. The Tigers sit ninth in Division VI Region 22. The top eight teams will get a first-round home game. I'd think Seneca East gets into the top eight with a win over Mohawk. Otherwise, the Tigers are likely going to be on the road in Week 11. Last season, Mohawk defeated Seneca East, 21-13.
This week: at Mohawk (8-1, 5-1)
Playoff position: No. 9 in Division VI, Region 22
