Welcome back to another edition of the Heart of Ohio Sports Observer.

Over 700 schools in Ohio began the high school football season in August and now as November approaches, just 336 remain.

The high school football season flew by, but man, was it another fun season. What does the playoffs have in store?

Unfortunately for the city of Tiffin, both Columbian and Calvert just missed out on the playoffs. One more win by each likely would have been enough, but alas, the season has come to an end. It kind of feels weird considering how much success both have had the past 10-plus years.

Just a reminder that just the top 12 teams in each region made the playoffs this year, as opposed to 16 the last few years. If you're one of the top 4 seeds, you'll get a bye in Week 11 and host a playoff game in Week 12.

Check out each entry to see how the five HOOS teams finished up with three of them making the playoffs.

Want to know more? Keep reading!

Here's a look at the five Heart of Ohio Sports teams, starting with Columbian.

Columbian (5-5, 3-1)

The Tornadoes got off to the start they needed against a high-powered, surging Perkins team. Columbian led most of the first quarter, but the Pirates put the hammer down and scored the final 37 points of the game to win running away, 43-14. As someone that has been a lot of Perkins this year, the Pirates have figured it out. They were 1-3 at one point this year, but have been on an absolute blitz the last six weeks of the season. Against Perkins, Logan Gooding completed just 10 of 35 passes for 146 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Masen Seitz ran 15 times for 56 yards and a touchdown while Johnny Bremeyer had two catches for 90 yards and the touchdown. The outright Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division title was on the line. It definitely didn't turn out the way Columbian wanted, but to playing for something in Week 10 is important. For the season, Gooding completed 130 of 236 passes for 1,846 yards, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions. Seitz finished as the season leader in rushing yards with 434 on 100 carries with four touchdowns, but he missed about half of the season. Brock Siesel added 64 rushes for 255 yards and four touchdowns in Seitz's absence. Bremyer led the receiving group with 44 catches for 786 yards and 10 touchdowns while Dashawn Russell caught 33 passes for 376 yards and six touchdowns. It's never fun when a season ends, but these Tornadoes were right there. Three of Columbian's five losses came by seven points or less. There should be some motivated kids in the weight room this season with a goal of making the playoffs next season with a run at the newly created Northern Ohio Conference's first league championship.

Calvert (4-6, 3-4)

The Senecas missed being the No. 12 seed in Division VII Region 26 by just .05 points. Or in other words, had one of the teams they beat won one more game, or Calvert won one more game, it would be gearing up for a playoff game this week. The Senecas took care of business on their end last week, defeating Willard 43-18. The Crimson Flashes presented a challenge in the first quarter before Calvert got going and pulled away. Tucker Coleman completed 8 of 19 passes for 93 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Nolan Lee was a beast on the ground, running 21 times for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Willard's defense has struggled to stop the run this season, so it's no shock to see that the Senecas ran the ball with success. For the season, Coleman was 56 of 102 passing for 658 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was the full-time starter at quarterback starting with Week 7. In the last four games, Calvert won twice, took a good Woodmore team to the buzzer and were blown out by Margaretta. He took over for Charlie Palm, who finished 65 of 119 for 726 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions. There's no doubt this will be a storyline to keep an eye on next summer and into the fall. Lee finished the season with 161 rushes for 876 yards and 14 touchdowns. Logan Demoss topped the receivers with 39 catches for 674 yards and nine touchdowns. Calvert is leaving the Sandusky Bay Conference for the Northern 10 Athletic Conference, so new adventures await coach Mike Lento and the Senecas when they take the field again.

Up next: Season complete

Hopewell-Loudon (9-1, 6-1)

Ho-hum, ho-hum, the Chieftains won another game in convincing fashion and are in the playoffs. I kid, I kid. Hopewell-Loudon continues to be the premier small-school team in the area, beating Woodmore 32-6 last week. The Chieftains had a shot at the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division title had Gibsonburg topped Margaretta, but the Polar Bears overcame a 6-0 deficit in the final six minutes to win the title outright. Nonetheless, Hopewell-Loudon was impressive against a solid Wildcats team. Jacoby Ellis completed 12 of 17 passes for 143 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Kellen Frankart returned for the first time since Week 4, running 10 times for 114 yards and a touchdown while Brody Brickman had 10 rushes for 71 yards and three touchdowns and six receptions for 52 yards. Jack Colatruglio hauled in five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. Hopewell-Loudon has won at least nine games for the fifth straight year. For the season, Ellis is 97 of 139 passing for 1,333 yards, 22 touchdowns and five interceptions. Jaysin Cramer actually leads the Chieftains with 88 attempts for 580 yards and seven touchdowns while Brickman has 72 rushes for 501 yards and 10 touchdowns. Frankart is up to 75 carries for 467 yards and four touchdowns. Colatruglio has 34 catches for 535 yards and eight touchdowns while Brickman has caught 34 passes for 490 yards and 11 touchdowns. For their rewards as one of the top four teams in Division VI Region 22, the Chieftains will have a bye in the first round of the playoffs. They will await the winner of No. 7 Bluffton (8-2) and No. 10 Western Reserve (8-2). Hopewell-Loudon will host that game Nov. 7.

Up next: Bye in Week 1 of the playoffs

Mohawk (8-2, 5-2)

The Warriors were smacked in the mouth last week against Seneca East. With at least a share of the Northern 10 Athletic Conference on the line, Mohawk didn't have much go its way in a 50-19 loss to Seneca East. That's a tough way to wrap up the regular season after running the table after the loss to Colonel Crawford. The good news for the Warriors is they are very much still alive and will have a home playoff game this week. Andon Clouse has completed 83 of 130 passes for 1,520 yards, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions while running 135 times for 814 yards and 11 touchdowns. Kaden Bish leads Mohawk with 125 carries for 1,208 yards and 19 touchdowns. Brant Kiran has 32 catches for 530 yards and six touchdowns while Levi Tiell has caught 25 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns. Mohawk is in the playoffs for the second-straight year and fifth time in seven seasons under coach Eric Daniel. The Warriors will welcome in No. 11 Montpelier (6-4). The Locomotives won three games in a row near the end of the season before a Week 10 loss to Edon (8-2). Montpelier scores points often, but also gives up some points. Hopefully the scoreboard is ready to work Friday when these two meet.

Up next: vs. Montpelier (6-4)

Seneca East (7-3, 5-2)

On the other end of the dial, the Tigers were ultra-impressive in a 50-19 road shellacking of Mohawk last week. Seneca East had the opportunity to play spoiler in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference and took the chance to keep Mohawk from winning at least a share of the league title. Nicholas Parks has completed 103 of 186 passes for 1,649 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions while running 141 times for 602 yards and eight touchdowns. Jackson Gayheart adds 116 rushes for 770 yards and eight touchdowns. Seneca East has six players with double-digit receptions, so they are balanced on the outside. The Tigers are making their 11th-straight playoff appearance. Seneca East will be back in Attica this week to face a familiar team to HOOS fans in Woodmore (7-3). Landon Rich leads the Wildcats with 228 rushes for 1,897 yards and 30 touchdowns. Rich can take over a game himself, so Seneca East's defense will have to be on point. Woodmore started the season 5-0 before going 2-3 with losses to Margaretta (35-0), Gibsonburg (14-8) and Hopewell-Loudon (32-6) down the back half of the season. The Wildcats scored at least 38 points in each of their seven wins, but as you can see, a combined 14 points in three losses. Feast or famine, I suppose.

Up next: vs. Woodmore (7-3)
