Tiffin, Ohio- Calvert's season has started a little different than what they would have liked it to but there are still positives to come out of the 1-2 start. Calvert has been through a lot in just three games from losing the season opener on the road by 36 to a tough Mohawk Warriors squad to traveling to Monroeville and winning by 14 to then losing a heartbreaker at home against Norwalk St. Paul on a game winning field goal.
The Senecas found themselves down early and quick to the Warriors in week 1 and had to large of a deficit to make a comeback. Between turnovers and no flow on either side of the ball, it wasn't the start head coach Mike Lento wanted to have. It was also the first varsity start to sophomore quarterback Charlie Palm.
Things made a 180 turn in week 2 and everything that went wrong at Mohawk went the right way at Monroeville. The offense put up 35 points that was followed with a strong defensive effort. For how Monroeville has been playing ball lately, Calvert came in and did something that hasn't been done in a minute with a 35-21 victory.
Then what looked to be a nice home opener victory at Hoernemann Stadium, things went a different way than what Calvert wanted it to and found themselves suffering a 22-20 loss to Norwalk St. Paul on a game winning field goal.
A few things are for sure; Logan DeMoss is a dog; Nolan Lee is a dog and Charlie Palm will get better each week getting experience as he has fellow classmate Tucker Coleman to fall back on as well with his experience at quarterback from last season.
So far, Calvert has been heavier in the passing game. Charlie Palm on the year has thrown for 490 yards on 38-68 (56%) with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Logan DeMoss leads receiving with 233 yards on 9 receptions and three touchdowns. Nolan Lee leads the rushing attack with 211 yards on 56 attempts and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Senecas have been struggling to stop the run game. In three games, they have allowed 482 rushing yards (avg. 160.7 yds/game) and nine touchdowns.
Connor Roush had a chance to catch up with Head Coach Mike Lento on how the season has started and how he likes where his team is, as well as catching up with Junior Nolan Lee and Senior Logan DeMoss, here is what they had to say:
The Senecas have to take it week by week and one opponent at a time if they want to keep playoff hopes alive, especially with the format moving down to 12 teams from 16 teams in each region.
