Welcome back to another edition of the Heart of Ohio Sports Observer.
It is that time of the year where teams are beat up, injuries are plaguing squads and the playoff races are heating up.
Columbian has been road warriors this season, but close the 2025 regular-season with three straight home games. First up is Bellevue. Then, across town, Calvert will host league leader Margaretta at Heidelberg University.
How will Hopewell-Loudon bounce back following its loss to Margaretta? Mohawk continues to roll and Seneca East has to respond after getting thumped by Colonel Crawford.
Just a reminder that just the top 12 teams in each region make the playoffs this year, as opposed to 16 the last few years. If you're one of the top 4 seeds, you'll get a bye in Week 11 and host a playoff game in Week 12.
Check out each entry to see where the five HOOS teams sit in their playoff regions ahead of Week 8.

Here's a look at the five Heart of Ohio Sports teams, starting with Columbian.
The Tornadoes hit the road for the fourth time in five weeks last week. Facing Norwalk after the Truckers upset Vermilion a week before, Columbian did just enough to escape Contractors Stadium with a 21-16 win. Norwalk is only 2-5, but they played the Tornadoes tough after the big win over Vermilion. Against Norwalk, Logan Gooding completed 21 of 29 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Brock Siesel added 18 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown. Siesel has been a bright spot for the Tornadoes after the injury to Masen Seitz, who hasn't played since Week 3. Johnny Bremyer caught seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. What stood out to me about Gooding is he hit six different receivers for receptions last week. For the season, Gooding is 99 of 162 passing for 1,345 yards, 13 touchdowns and just one interception. Seitz still leads the ground game with 53 rushes for 235 yards and three touchdowns, but Seisel is up to 60 carries for 232 yards and four touchdowns. Bremyer paces Columbian with 35 catches for 526 yards and six touchdowns while Dashawn Russell has 23 receptions for 235 yards and four touchdowns. This week, the Tornadoes begin their three-game homestand at Frost-Kalnow Stadium against rival Bellevue. The Redmen are 4-3, having defeated Huron 28-14 last week. Ike Brown has completed 68 of 143 passes for 700 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Mason Bova leads the Bellevue ground game with 66 carries for 325 yards and five touchdowns, but has missed the last two weeks. In his place, Nolan Hartman had 21 rushes for 119 yards a week ago against Huron. Last season, Columbian defeated Bellevue 28-14.
This week: vs. Bellevue (4-3)
Playoff position: No. 14 in Division III, Region 10
The Seneca shook off a Week 6 loss to Gibsonburg by defeating Northwood on the road last week, 48-32. Northwood likes to score points, but also gives up points. Calvert was able to keep pace and jump up to No. 8 in their region standings. Against Northwood, Tucker Coleman got the start at quarterback and completed 6 of 8 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. The biggest numbers came from Nolan Lee on the ground as he racked up 33 carries for 201 yards and four touchdowns. Coleman has been a steady hand in the backfield for the Senecas after taking over for Charlie Palm. Coleman is now 10 of 19 passing for 179 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions while Palm is 65 of 119 for 726 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions. Lee is up to 118 rushes for 524 yards and nine touchdowns. Logan Demoss leads the receivers with 19 catches for 431 yards and six touchdowns. Things get significantly tougher for Calvert this week as it welcomes in Sandusky Bay Conference River Division leaders Margaretta. The Polar Bears stunned Hopewell-Loudon last week, but more on that in a minute. Judah Keller paces Margaretta's ground game with 75 carries for 622 yards and nine touchdowns. Jake Bouy has completed 30 of 57 passes for 654 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions while running 42 times for 304 yards and nine touchdowns. Tyson Bailey has 45 attempts for 328 yards for Margaretta. The Polar Bears shut out Calvert last year, 10-0.
This week: vs. Margaretta (6-1, 4-0)
Playoff position: No. 8 in Division VII, Region 26
The big question this week is how will the Chieftains react following a 29-26 loss to Margaretta last week? The Polar Bears got a nine-yard touchdown pass from Jake Bouy to Kale Bailey with 12 seconds left to knock off Hopewell-Loudon. The loss snapped the Chieftains' 31-game Sandusky Bay Conference River Division winning streak that dated back to 2019. Against Margaretta, quarterback Jacoby Ellis completed 11 of 15 passes for 102 yards and an interception. Hopewell-Loudon excelled on the ground as Brody Brickman had 22 rushes for 103 yards and two touchdowns while Jaysin Cramer tallied 13 carries for 93 yards and two touchdowns. For the season, Ellis is 68 of 100 for 798 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. With Kellen Frankart out the past three-plus games, Cramer leads the Chieftains with 71 rushes for 450 yards and six touchdowns while Brickman is up to 48 carries for 258 yards and five touchdowns. Brickman is the top receiver as well, catching 25 passes for 315 yards and eight touchdowns. Jack Colatruglio missed one game, but has 22 receptions for 318 yards and four touchdowns. If there ever was a week for a bounce back and a chance to clean some things up, it'll be this week at Willard. The Crimson Flashes have lost five games in a row, giving up at least42 points in each of the five games. Willard coach Bill Speller resigned his position after last week's 42-12 loss to Lakota. Last season, Hopewell-Loudon pummeled Willard 56-0.
This week: at Willard (2-5, 0-4)
Playoff position: No. 1 in Division VI, Region 22
The Warriors took care of business last week against Wynford, 50-14. As mentioned a few times, Mohawk was a big favorite during the past three weeks, defeating Bucyrus and Buckeye Central first before pummeling Wynford. The Warriors have been solid since the tough loss to Colonel Crawford. For the season, Andon Clouse has completed 59 of 84 passes for 1,126 yards, 13 touchdowns and just one interception while running 87 times for 562 yards and nine touchdowns. Kaden Bish leads the ground game with 74 rushes for 809 yards and 15 touchdowns. Brant Kirian has 26 receptions for 434 yards and five touchdowns while Levi Tiell has caught 17 passes for 472 yards and five touchdowns. Things get a little bit tougher this week for Mohawk with a trip to Upper Sandusky. The Rams are 3-2 over their past five games after starting the season 0-2. Keegan Dunn has completed 70 of 135 passes for 1,086 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions for the Rams. Ethan Lewis leads Upper Sandusky with 108 carries for 516 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Heilman has 25 receptions for 540 yards and seven touchdowns while Caine Rupe has hauled in 21 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns. Mohawk defeated Upper Sandusky 13-6 last year.
This week: at Upper Sandusky (3-4, 2-2)
Playoff position: No. 6 in Division VI, Region 26
The Tigers were on the wrong end of a 31-0 blowout loss to Colonel Crawford. The Eagles have established themselves as one of the best teams in Division VI and it showed against Seneca East. The good news for the Tigers is they get to face Buckeye Central and Bucyrus over the next two weeks before a trip to Sycamore to take on Mohawk in Week 10. For the season, Nicholas Parks has completed 77 of 144 passes for 943 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions while running 120 times for 522 yards and six touchdowns. Jackson Gayheart adds 79 attempts for 378 yards and two scores for Seneca East. The Tigers have five different players with double-digit receptions. Ethan Shultz leads the way with 19 catches for 159 yards and a touchdown while Gayheart has 14 receptions for 164 yards and a touchdown. Buckeye Central enters following blowout losses to Mohawk (48-0) and Carey (56-0) the last two weeks. Jack Phillips is 56 of 102 passing for 612 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions while running 58 times for 328 yards and four touchdowns. Austin Bogner has 123 carries for 298 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, Seneca East topped Buckeye Central 56-21.
This week: vs. Buckeye Central (3-4, 1-3)
Playoff position: No. 8 in Division VI, Region 22
