Welcome back to another edition of the Heart of Ohio Sports Observer.
Here we are already at the midway point of the regular season.
What a wild week it was for the five HooS teams. Two were blown out of the water while one had a tough loss that could eliminate them from the league race after one week.
We had a couple of big wins and things are heating up (literally) as the season progresses.
A kind reminder that just the top 12 teams in each region make the playoffs this year, as opposed to 16 the last few years. If you're one of the top 4 seeds, you'll get a bye in Week 11 and host a playoff game in Week 12.

Here's a look at the five Heart of Ohio Sports teams, starting with Columbian.
Needless to say, things did not go well for the Tornadoes in a thumping 81-7 loss to Division III No. 1 Bishop Watterson (4-0). Oddly enough, Columbian hasn't given up that many points since one of the wildest high school football games in state history, an 83-82 overtime win over Shelby in 2014. The Tornadoes have given up 50 or more points a few times over the years, but nothing like this. Logan Gooding completed 10 of 15 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown, but Columbian was limited to negative-24 yards rushing on 22 attempts on the ground. Johnny Bremyer had six catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. The 53 points the Tornadoes gave up in the first half is almost as many as they surrendered in the first three games combined (60). For the season, Gooding is 57 of 91 passing for 745 yards, nine touchdowns and an interception. Despite not playing against Watterson, Masen Seitz leads the ground game with 53 rushes for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Bremyer leads the receivers with 20 catches for 249 yards and three touchdowns while Dashawn Russell has 19 receptions for 216 yards and four touchdowns. Columbian's defense will once again be challenged this week by Huron, who is scoring 45.5 points per game. The Tigers have scored at least 32 points in each of their games this season. Huron quarterback Landon Hohler is 81 of 108 passing for 1,180 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has seven rushing touchdowns. His top targets are Caleb Staley, who has 23 catches for 452 yards and five touchdowns, and Braxton Barrett (22-288-3). The game is Columbian's second home game of the season, but the lone home game in a five-week stretch for the Tornadoes. Huron topped Columbian last year, 38-20.
This week: vs. Huron (2-2)
Another team that didn't see things go well was the Senecas in a 54-0 loss to Hopewell-Loudon. Calvert has given up at least 21 points in every game this year. The Senecas just happened to outscore Monroeville for their lone win of the season. Against H-L, there weren't many positives. Charlie Palm completed 3 of 8 passes for 19 yards and two interceptions. Nolan Lee ran seven times for 24 yards and Logan DeMoss forced a fumble that was recovered by Alijah LeMasters. For the season, Palm is 41 of 76 for 509 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. Lee has 63 rushes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Tucker Coleman leads Calvert with 13 catches, but for just 86 yards. DeMoss tops the Senecas with 244 yards receiving on 10 catches with three touchdowns. Calvert is also at home this week as it hosts Lakota (3-1) at Heidelberg's Hoernemann Stadium. The Raiders are coming in after a 42-6 loss to Woodmore. Quarterback Jalen Wagner has completed 18 of 29 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns, but his status is questionable after leaving last week's game injured. Nate Griggson has rushed 41 times for 378 yards and five touchdowns. Avery Shilling leads the receivers with nine catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Calvert beat Lakota last year, 28-0.
This week: vs. Lakota (3-1)
The Chieftains laid the wood to rival Calvert, 54-0. Not much went wrong for Hopewell-Loudon, who led 42-0 at halftime. The Chieftains' defense continues to play well, allowing just 28 points in the first four games of the season. Edison scored twice in 14 seconds against H-L. Otherwise, it could be less. Against Calvert, quarterback Jacoby Ellis completed 10 of 13 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Kellen Frankart had five rushes for 30 yards and a fumble, but his status is questionable this week. In his place, Collin Link had 11 rushes for 125 yards and two touchdowns while Jaysin Cramer had 10 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown. Jack Colatruglio caught all three touchdowns from Ellis, finishing with four catches for 82 yards. Colatruglio missed the first couple games of the season, but has picked up where he left off last year over the last two contests. For the year, Ellis is 38 of 59 for 462 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. Frankart leads the ground game with 65 carries for 353 yards and three touchdowns, but Cramer has added 29 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Colatruglio is up to eight catches for 151 yards and four touchdowns. Brody Brickman leads the way with 16 catches for 229 yards and four touchdowns. H-L hits the road to take on a tough Gibsonburg team, who already has 1,175 yards rushing as a team. Grant Smith leads the way with 76 rushes for 601 yards and nine touchdowns while Aiden Nims (19-226-2), quarterback Reece Walby (14-184-5) and Aiden Morant (20-161-2) are all viable options. H-L defeated Gibsonburg last year, 27-14, after trailing at halftime.
This week: at Gibsonburg (3-1)
The Warriors took a 21-17 lead early in the fourth quarter on Colonel Crawford on an Andon Clouse one-yard touchdown run. After the Eagles scored, Mohawk drove to the CC 5 before turning the ball over on downs with about four minutes to play. Colonel Crawford picked up a couple of first downs to run out the clock and send Mohawk to a tough league loss. The Warriors need to take care of business the rest of the way and hope someone knocks off Colonel Crawford in order to have a shot at a league championship. For the season, Clouse has completed 35 of 53 passes for 620 yards, six touchdowns and an interception. He leads the ground game with 69 rushes for 447 yards and seven touchdowns. Kaden Bish is up to 48 attempts for 399 yards and five touchdowns. Brant Kirian has 14 receptions for 204 yards and three touchdowns while Levi Tiell has eight catches for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Mohawk will likely be a heavy favorite in its next four games - Bucyrus, Buckeye Central, Wynford and Upper Sandusky - before facing Carey and Seneca East in the final two weeks of the season. Bucyrus is led by quarterback Isaac Makeever, who has completed 55 of 102 passes for 558 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions. He has 78 rushes for 317 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Mohawk defeated Bucyrus 63-0 last season.
This week: at Bucyrus (1-3)
The Tigers finally had an outburst offensively, destroying Wynford 62-8. Seneca East had scored just 37 points over the first three weeks of the season combined and that included a 2-0 defensive win over Ashland Crestview in Week 1. The Tigers had not scored at least 62 points in a game since a 62-28 win over Willard on Sept. 3, 2021. Nicholas Parks has completed 42 of 74 passes for 593 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions this year while running 74 times for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Jackson Gayheart has carried the ball 48 times for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Shultz leads the receivers with 15 catches for 120 yards and a touchdown while Jaron Depinet has five catches for 168 yards and a touchdown. Seneca East hosts Carey in a key Northern 10 Athletic Conference game this week. The Blue Devils picked up their first win of the season last week, defeating Upper Sandusky 33-7. Carey's first three opponents - Hopewell-Loudon, Galion and Lima Central Catholic - are a combined 11-1 through four weeks. The lone loss was by Galion to Shelby, who was No. 1 in the Division IV state poll this week. Carey is paced by its ground game with Mace Puckett carrying 69 times for 390 yards and a touchdown. Tripp Phoenix has completed 20 of 39 passes for 255 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Seneca East squeaked out a 34-31 win over Carey last year.
This week: vs. Carey (1-3)
