Halfway point, what's up?
I know I don't have to repeat it, but high school football flies by. Now, I'm getting old and I have to stop and remember where I went the first few weeks, but it does just seem like a day or two ago I was at Bellevue Athletic Field in Week 1 when Clyde hammered the Redmen.
We’ve reached the halfway point of the regular season. To put it into further perspective, those that play in the state semifinals or finals, we're about a third of the way through the entire season.
I'm excited to see Tiffin Columbian for the first time this week as the Tornadoes travel to Huron. That's an exciting game that I think comes down to the wire. Dare I say there's someone here at HooS that thinks it'll be a blowout? I won't say who or what score they predicted, but I think they're wrong! We shall see soon!!
Without any more babbling, here’s some chatter on each of our five teams.
The Tornadoes took another big loss to a state-ranked team when they lost to Bishop Watterson last Friday. There’s no doubt Columbian’s schedule is tough. The Tornadoes have already faced the No. 1 team in Division III (Watterson) and the No. 2 team in Division III (Chardon). Throw in a contest with Division IV No. 1 Perkins to end the season and that’s just absolutely packed. Contests with Huron, Sandusky, and Clyde fall in between and the Tornadoes will be battle-tested should they make the playoffs. The lone bright spot for Columbian against Watterson was Brady Bonnell rushing 17 times for 76 yards and a touchdown. For the season, Zach Shawberry has completed 37-of-74 passes for 432 yards and six touchdowns while Bonnell has 46 carries for 212 yards and four touchdowns. The leading receiver for the Tornadoes continues to be Johnny Bremeyer, who has caught 11 passes for 139 yards and three scores. Huron will be tough for Columbian. I’ve watched Huron’s last two games. The Tigers struggled in a 17-7 loss to Genoa before pounding Dayton Dunbar last Saturday, 49-14. Genoa ran 66 times for 332 yards against Huron. Against Dunbar, quarterback Sam Hohler threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score. The Tigers opened the season with huge wins over Norwalk St. Paul (38-0) and Brookside (41-7). The winner of this one will certainly pick up some big playoff points and continue to throughout the rest of the season.
Up next: at Huron (3-1)
Things got a little more on track for the Senecas last week when they took care of business at Lakota, 28-0. It was obviously an emotional game for Calvert coach Mike Lento after spending the past seven seasons at the helm of Lakota. He led the Raiders to three playoff appearances in the last four years. But, the Senecas played well and played a lot better offensively after just 10 points in Week 3’s win over St. Paul. Against Lakota, Cal Warnament had a big night with 26 carries for 176 yards and three touchdowns. The other score came on a pass from Tucker Coleman to John Schumacher. For the season, Coleman has completed 31-of-57 passes for 426 yards while Warnament has chewed up 516 cards on 105 carries with six touchdowns. Schumacher leads a balanced receiving group with 10 catches for 141 yards while Logan Demoss has eight receptions for 156 yards. Things will get interesting this week as Calvert heads to Gibsonburg. You obviously don’t want to put any carts before the horses (or something like that), but if Calvert wins, it could go unscathed and set-up a big matchup in Week 10 against Hopewell-Loudon. The Golden Bears are going to run the ball and there’s no hiding that fact. For the season, Gibsonburg has run 153 times for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns and that includes a dreadful 27 carries for 45 yards in last week’s loss at Hopewell-Loudon (that Gibsonburg led at halftime of). Grant Smith leads the Golden Bears with 70 carries for 359 yards and three touchdowns. Reese Walby adds 44 attempts for 350 yards and five touchdowns, but had just three carries for -1 yard last week.
Up next: at Gibsonburg (2-2)
Check out what Gibsonburg head coach Joe Wyant and defensive coordinator Glenn Owens had to say about this matchup on the coaches corner from this past Tuesday
As I mentioned above, the Chieftains trailed 14-0 in the third quarter against Gibsonburg before turning it around and beating the Golden Bears, 27-14. H-L did it with a nice balance, but the running game was huge for the Chieftains. Not only did Braylon Martinez run 23 times for 196 yards and two touchdowns, Kellen Frankart added 16 carries for 110 yards and a score. Basically, Hopewell-Loudon beat Gibsonburg at its own game. No, the formations weren’t the same, but the Chieftains ran it down Gibsonburg’s throat. Jacoby Ellis did complete 14-of-17 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown for Hopewell-Loudon. For the season, Ellis is 58-of-85 for 679 yards and four touchdowns while Martinez is up to 60 carries for 368 yards and six TDs. Jack Colatruglio paces the receivers with 26 catches for 343 yards, but Martinez adds 18 receptions for 216 yards and three touchdowns. The Chieftains are at home again this week as they welcome Lakota, who has struggled this season. Through three games, Jalen Wagner had already thrown 10 interceptions at quarterback for the Raiders. Lakota did have a big win over Arcadia (35-0), but were blown out by Monroeville and Calvert. Hopewell-Loudon will be big favorites in its next couple of games – Lakota, at Margaretta, and vs. Willard – before the open date Oct. 11. A showdown at Tiffin Calvert in Week 10 could be looming big.
Up next: vs. Lakota (1-3)
The Tigers got a much-needed win last week at home against Wynford, 36-15. Seneca East played by far its best defensive game of the year, limiting the Royals’ offense. As I mentioned last week, the Tigers need to rack up some wins when they can as they play Carey this week, Colonel Crawford in two weeks, and Mohawk in the regular-season finale. Seneca East has the third-best scoring offense in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference at 29.5 points per game, but also the third-worst scoring defense, allowing 31.8 points per game. That’s improved from last week after the 21-point win over Wynford. For the season, Nicholas Parks has completed 57-of-93 passes for 987 yards for 12 touchdowns. Jackson Gayheart paces the offense with 44 rushes for 170 yards while Taylor Young adds 18 attempts for 145 yards. Young and Bryler Beamer continue to be a tough 1-2 combination for Seneca East has Young has 22 catches for 430 yards and six scores. Beamer has hauled in 23 passes for 398 yards and four scores. Seneca East travels to a one-win Carey team this week, but that win-loss record could be deceiving considering who the Blue Devils have played. Carey has racked up 178 carries for 821 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground this season. Eli Steen leads the way with 81 attempts for 441 yards and five TDs.
Up next: at Carey (1-3)
By far the most impressive and dominating win for any of our teams this year has to be the Warriors’ 35-7 destruction of previously unbeaten and state-ranked Colonel Crawford. I’ll be honest. I didn’t think Mohawk had much of a chance (sorry!). It is one thing to rack up some wins against inferior competition, but it’s another to go on the road against a team like the Eagles and dominate. Mohawk led 28-0 at halftime before cruising to the win. Ben Bogner continues to play out of this world for the Warriors, completing 50-of-78 passes for 812 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air, and adding 55 carries for 298 yards on the ground. Kaden Bish and Kahne Hayman each have three rushing touchdowns for Mohawk. Those two are also huge options for Bogner out wide. Hayman leads the Northern 10 Athletic Conference with 26 catches for 468 yards and six touchdowns while Bish has 14 receptions for 250 yards and three TDs. There’s no time to look over the next opponent for the Warriors as they host a winless Bucyrus team just itching to get a win. Mohawk should be heavy favorites in its next few games as they travel to Buckeye Central and Wynford in the following weeks. Mohawk has bounced back incredibly after the tough Week 1 loss to Tiffin Calvert. The Warriors might have some massive, important games to play this season.
Up next: vs. Bucyrus (0-4)

Here is last week's article: https://heartofohiosports.com/ohio-high-school-football-week-4-preview/
We’ll start with the local games first…
When: Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Port Clinton lost at Ottawa Hills, 37-30; Clyde lost to Toledo St. Francis at home, 30-13.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 15, 2023; Clyde won at Port Clinton, 34-13.
Intrigue: Port Clinton’s Wyatt Yarbrough threw for 187 yards, two TDs, and 2 INTs last week. Gabe Koskela and Brian Rohrer were his main targets as Koskela had two receptions for 64 yards and a TD, and Rohrer had three receptions for 83 yards.
Defensively, Port Clinton was led last week by Rohrer, Koskela, and Gavin Cornell. Rohrer had 8.5 tackles, 2 TFLs, and a sack; Koskela had 4.5 tackles and a TFL; and Cornell had 7.5 tackles in the defeat to Ottawa Hills.
Clyde QB Brennan Wilson is 38-of-57 passing for 533 yards, seven TDs, and two INTS this season.
Wilson has several weapons to whom he likes to throw: Brayden Olsen (12 receptions, 225 yards, three TDs), Kam Shortridge (14 receptions, 149 yards, two TDs), Price Carter (five receptions, 121 yards, two TDs), Jackson Dashner (eight receptions for 107 yards), and Cole Sengstock (eight receptions, 68 yards, and three TDs).
Adam Young leads the team in rushing with 43 attempts, 222 yards, and three TDs.
The Flier defense is led by Hector Garza, who has 30.5 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery after four weeks. Cedric Messer has 25 tackles and a forced fumble; and Sengstock has 23 tackles and a fumble recovery this year.
When: Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Fremont Ross lost Whitmer at home, 38-14; Findlay lost at Oregon Clay, 54-40.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 15, 2023; Findlay won at Fremont Ross, 49-29.
Intrigue: Longtime rivalry.
Fremont Ross has dropped two straight since their Week 2 win against Sandusky. Although they’re 1-3, the Little Giants have a shot at the playoffs if they can win three or more of their remaining regular season games. That’ll be easier said than done against the Trojans this week.
Findlay was able to move the ball well last week, gaining 585 yards in total offense. 569 of that was through the air, and only 16 of it was on the ground. It didn’t help that Blue and Gold threw three picks last week.
The Trojan defense also gave up a lot of yards in Week 4. They were scorched for 419 yards passing and 143 rushing for 562 yards given up.
When: Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Vermilion beat Elyria Catholic at home, 25-9; Sandusky beat Padua Franciscan at home 28-0.
Previous Meeting: Sept. 15, 2023; Sandusky won at Vermilion, 62-28.
Intrigue: Vermilion had 190 yards rushing to go with 22 yards passing last week. They were only 1-of-10 on third down conversions.
Their saving grace was a Sailors defense that forced two INTs and a fumble.
Sandusky was 8-of-11 on their third down conversions last week. Despite throwing a couple picks, Sandusky was able to put up 28 points.
The Blue Streak defense forced four turnovers in Week 4, with three INTs, and one fumble recovery.
Sandusky is going to need every victory they can get if they want to make it to the postseason.
When: Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Tiffin Columbian lost to Bishop Watterson at home, 51-7; Huron beat Dunbar at home, 49-14.

Huron’s Landon Hohler threw 13-of-16 completed passes for 146 yards with four TDs in last week’s win.
The Tiger defense held Dunbar to just 57 yards rushing on 27 attempts in Week 4.
When: Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
Last Week: Shelby beat Marion Harding at home, 33-14; Galion won at Clear Fork, 41-21.

The Whippets gave up a mere 36 rushing yards against Marion Harding. Karsen Homan had four sacks in the first half.
Galion QB Braxton Prosser had 200 of his team’s 208 offensive yards as he threw for 52 yards and two TDs and rushed for 148 yards and two TDs on six attempts.
The Tiger’s defense was helped by a pick-six by Kurt Hay and two blocked punts by Zach Sallee. One of the blocks was returned 84-yards for a TD by Cam Kuehlman.

Intrigue: Watterson’s Zack Weber had five carries for 182 yards and two TDs at halftime in last week’s win.
Chardon has outscored opponents 99-14 after three games. Even though they have a tougher schedule, they will likely be seeded high enough to earn two home postseason games.
This will be the toughest opponent either team faces in the regular season.

Last Week: Massillon beat Canisius [Buffalo, NY] at home, 41-7; St. Edward beat Elder at home, 24-17.

These were the best Ohio high school football games to watch in Week 5. Thank you for reading, and I’ll see you next week.
