Welcome back to the weekly Observer here on Heart of Ohio Sports.
Here we are in Week 13 of the high school football season. We are down to just two local teams and they both have massive contests this week. We're down to the final 16 teams in each division, so to be among them is elite. From here, the lights just get brighter by the minute!
Postseason awards are flowing out and tons of local kids are being honored. It has been an incredible season for local teams and we've had a blast here. Hopefully it keeps rolling beyond this week!
My guys from Heart of Ohio Sports will be busy this week with coverage of Mohawk vs. Columbus Grove at Fostoria Memorial Stadium and Hopewell-Loudon vs. Patrick Henry at Findlay's Donnell Stadium. Where can you get better coverage of these games than FREE live streaming video and the best content around?! All of this for you and for free! Tune in! Tell your friends!
Without any further babbling, here's a look at our local teams:
I really thought the Senecas had a good chance against 15th-seeded Delphos St. John's, but Calvert never got anything going in a 27-0 loss to the Blue Jays. Calvert finishes the season with seven wins and a playoff victory, but the inconsistency with the Senecas is the biggest story. Was it the offense that could score 30, 40, 50 points, or the one that struggled and was shut out? That was the tale of the final six or seven weeks of the season for Calvert. Against DSJ, Tucker Coleman completed 11-of-26 passes for 146 yards and two interceptions while Cal Warnament had 17 carries for 75 yards. The Senecas kept it close early, but DSJ pulled away late. For the season, Coleman was 97-of-187 passing for 1,267 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Just a friendly reminder that Coleman is a freshman. There's some ups and downs in there, but he has three more seasons in Calvert blue. Warnament was for the most part consistent for the Senecas this year. He racked up 213 carries for 1,524 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. I'm sure he will be getting some all-Ohio honors soon. Logan Demoss had 32 receptions for 498 yards and three TDs and Carter Wolph caught 26 passes for 292 yards and five scores. Demoss paced the defense with 108 tackles while he and Nolan Lee each picked four interceptions. Calvert will have some pieces back next year in Mike Lento's second season.

Another win, another masterful performance by the Chieftains' defense. This time, H-L made easy work of Seneca East, 34-0. Again, Hopewell-Loudon has not allowed double-digit points in a game since Week 4's 27-13 come-from-behind win over Gibsonburg. The Chieftains are so good on both sides of the ball. It has become very apparent that the bye week in Week 8 did not bother H-L. Against Seneca East, Jacoby Ellis completed 10-of-16 passes for 148 yards, but Hopewell-Loudon was tremendous on the ground. Kellen Frankart had 19 carries for 126 yards with a touchdown while Braylon Martinez ran 13 times for 86 yards and two TDs. Jaysin Cramer also added a rushing score for the Chieftains. Hopewell-Loudon ran the ball down the Tigers' throat and there was little to no resistance from Seneca East. For the year, Ellis is up to 114-of-169 passing for 1,429 yards while Martinez has tallied 139 times for 941 yards and 19 touchdowns. Frankart adds 130 rushes for 706 yards and nine scores. In the words of good ol' Jim Ross, business is about to pick up for Hopewell-Loudon. The Chieftains take on Patrick Henry, who has just two losses this season - 27-13 to Columbus Grove (12-0) and 21-15 to Liberty Center (12-0). This game will take place at Findlay's Donnell Stadium and it should be an absolute dandy. PH eliminated Hopewell-Loudon last year, 26-14, in Bowling Green. Revenge on the mind of the Chieftains?
Up next: vs. Patrick Henry (10-2) at Findlay's Donnell Stadium
As I noted, not much went right for the Tigers in a 34-0 loss to Hopewell-Loudon. This was the 10th-straight season Seneca East made the playoffs, but the first time it won a playoff game since 2020. While the ending was a bummer against H-L, it was another great season for the Tigers. For the year, Nicholas Parks really stepped into his own at quarterback, completing 163-of-280 passes for 2,653 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Taylor Young was a great No. 1 target for Parks, catching 68 passes for 1,141 yards and 12 touchdowns while Bryler Beamer had 45 catches for 809 yards and seven touchdowns. Parks is just a junior and will be back next year for Seneca East, but Young and Beamer both graduate, so new receivers will have to step up next year for the Tigers. Seneca East was right in the mix for the Northern 10 Athletic Conference title up until the final play of the regular season, so it was another great coaching job by Ed Phillips.

Speaking of trains that just keep rolling, the Warriors dispatched McComb, 20-13. It continues to be an absolutely incredible season for the Warriors. I personally think coach Eric Daniel is worthy of coach of the year in Division VII when the honors come out, but we'll see. Someone that will almost certainly be honored is quarterback Ben Bogner, who has had an absolutely splendid senior year. He is up to 119-of-221 passing for 2,173 yards and 26 touchdowns while running 180 times for 1,263 yards and 10 more scores. That is over 3,400 yards of offense with 36 TDs. What a year. Kahne Hayman missed two games this year, but still has 55 receptions for 1,047 yards and 11 touchdowns. As I mentioned with Hopewell-Loudon above, things are going to get significantly, significantly tougher for Mohawk this week as they face Columbus Grove (12-0) at Fostoria Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs have only had two close games this year - beating Patrick Henry (27-13) and Lima Central Catholic (28-0) in competitive games. They beat one-loss Bluffton, 42-0, and topped LCC in the playoffs, 38-6. Running back Trenton Barraza leads Grove with over 2,000 yards on the ground. Mohawk, like Hopewell-Loudon, will have to be at its best if it wants to play in Week 14.
