Heart of Ohio Sports Observer Vol 3.12

Welcome back to the weekly Observer here on Heart of Ohio Sports.

We have come upon Week 12 of the high school football season. If you're one of the ones fortunate to play (or win) in the state championships, this week will mark three-fourths of the season complete.

Of our teams last week, four of the five won and play this week. Of the four remaining, two face off in Bascom, but we'll get into that.

Both the Sandusky Bay Conference and Northern 10 Athletic Conference released their league honors, so a big congrats to all the kids that received awards. A little more on that as well in a minute.

My guys from Heart of Ohio Sports will be busy this week with coverage of McComb at Mohawk and Seneca East at Hopewell-Loudon on Friday, and the bonus game Saturday when Delphos St. John's travels to Calvert. All of this for you and for free! Tune in! Tell your friends!

Without any further babbling, here's a look at our local teams:

Columbian (4-7)

I think we all knew it was an uphill climb for the Tornadoes when they faced Benedictine last week and it was true. TC struggled and lost, 35-7, ending the season 4-7. There's no doubt the schedule was tough with the likes of Chardon, Bishop Watterson, Fremont Ross and Huron just in the non-league. Throw in games against Clyde, Sandusky and Perkins in the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division and it was a challenge. For the season, Zach Shawberry completed 109-of-226 passes for 1,373 yards and 13 touchdowns. Masen Seitz ran 182 times for 1,054 yards and 10 scores. Johnny Bremyer had a great year out wide for the Tornadoes with 36 catches for 644 yards and eight TDs. I still believe the talent on this team was good, but man, was that schedule tough. I have no doubt that Judd Lutz will have this team back and competing next year.

Up next: SEASON COMPLETE

Calvert (7-4)

There was no better time than a playoff game to score a season-high in points like the Senecas did in blitzing Hardin Northern, 55-25. It was the Cal Warnament show as he exploded for 332 yards on just 21 carries with four touchdowns. That's not a bad night if I may so say myself. Tucker Coleman was also 11-of-15 for 102 yards and two scores. Calvert continues its on and off play. Over the last four games, the Senecas have scored 51, 42, 0, and 55 points. Up and down, up and down. For the season, Coleman is 86-of-161 for 1,121 yards and 12 touchdowns while Warnament is up to 196 rushes for 1,449 yards and 17 TDs. Logan Demoss (29 receptions, 461 yards, 3 TDs) and Carter Wolph (25-286-5) continue to be great options at wide receiver for Coleman. Next up is an unique team in Delphos St. John's. Calvert gets to play another game at home at Frost-Kalnow after DSJ upset No. 2 Upper Scioto Valley. The Blue Jays played in the rugged Midwest Athletic Conference and have lost to Marion Local (71-0), Anna (34-0), Coldwater (52-7) and St. Henry (49-6) this year. The game will be at 5 p.m. Saturday with the team being in Dayton on Thursday for the volleyball state semifinal and hopefully Friday for the state championship. This will be far from easy for Calvert, but it's certainly a winnable game.

Up next: vs. Delphos St. John's (4-7) in Division VII, Region 26 playoffs

Hopewell-Loudon (10-0)

Speaking of taking care of business, that's exactly what the Chieftains did when they trounced Margaretta, 43-8. This was a rematch from a Week 6 regular-season game when H-L trailed in the third quarter before waking up for a 16-7 win. Against the Polar Bears this time, Jacoby Ellis and Kellen Frankart each tossed a touchdown pass while Frankart ran in three scores. Hopewell-Loudon's defense continues to be a key figure for the Chieftains. Over the last six games, H-L has allowed a total of 15 points. That's 2.5 points per game. In reality, Hopewell-Loudon has four shutouts in that span while allowing all 15 points to Margaretta over the two games. For the season, Ellis has completed 104-of-153 passes for 1,281 yards and 11 touchdowns while Frankart is 25-of-36 for 352 yards and six scores. On the ground, Braylon Martinez has 126 carries for 855 yards and 17 touchdowns and Frankart is up to 111 rushes for 580 yards and eight scores. Jack Colatruglio is the leading receiver with 47 catches for 777 yards and five scores. The Chieftains get one more home game this season as it faces Seneca East after its 56-20 whipping of Western Reserve. An all-Seneca County matchup in Basom? Yes please.

Up next: vs. Seneca East (7-4) in Division VI, Region 22 playoffs

Seneca East (7-4)

The Tigers, you said? All Seneca East did was go on the road and lay the smack down on Western Reserve, 56-20. That nearly matches the Tigers' season-high in points (59 against Bucyrus), but was the most points Western Reserve allowed all year. It doesn't seem like it matters the year or players, Seneca East is going to be capable of winning a playoff game no matter who it faces. For the season, Nicholas Parks has completed 150-of-251 passes for 2,520 yards with 30 touchdowns. His top receiver is Taylor Young with 64 catches for 1,109 yards and 12 TDs while Bryler Beamer has 43 receptions for 769 yards and seven scores. Hitting the road again, Seneca East will have probably its toughest task of the season to date when it goes to Bascom to battle Hopewell-Loudon. These two are former Midland Athletic League rivals, so Seneca East's Ed Phillips and Hopewell-Loudon's Brian Colatruglio are familiar.

Up next: at Hopewell-Loudon (10-0) in Division VI, Region 22 playoffs

Mohawk (9-2)

The Warriors had little to no issues taking out Edgerton, 49-14. Mohawk bounced back after a loss to Upper Sandusky by beating Carey and Seneca East before opening the playoffs at home with a huge win over the Bulldogs. I would like to take a second and toot my own horn for correctly picking Ben Bogner to be Player of the Year in the N-10. It was Offensive Player of the Year, but nonetheless, he's had a great year. Through 11 games, he has completed 114-of-198 passes for 1,951 yards and 24 touchdowns. On the ground, he leads Mohawk with 152 carries for 1,118 yards with nine TDs. I think he has a pretty good chance to garner some significant all-Ohio honors when those results come out next week. Kahne Hayman is up to 52 catches for 905 yards and 10 scores while Kaden Bish has eight rushing touchdowns and Kaleb Bish has seven TD receptions. Mohawk will be at home this week when it hosts McComb, who upset Edon, 28-14. The Panthers have gotten hot lately with four wins in a row after sitting at 4-3 at one point. Last week's win was McComb's best of the season with losses this year coming to Liberty-Benton, Ada, and Leipsic, who were each playoff teams. This should be one of the better games in northwest Ohio this week.
