Welcome back to the weekly Observer here on Heart of Ohio Sports.

The playoffs are here! All five of our teams made the playoffs while plenty of local teams nearby also made it, so we are still football heavy.

Congrats to Hopewell-Loudon for winning the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division outright as well as Mohawk for taking the Northern 10 Athletic Conference by itself. More on both of those teams here in just a minute!

Columbian and Seneca East will be on the road this week while Calvert, Hopewell-Loudon, and Mohawk have home games. Heart of Ohio Sports will have coverage of the Hardin Northern at Calvert and Edgerton at Mohawk playoff games this Friday for FREE! Tune in! Tell your friends!

Without any further babbling, here's a look at our local teams:

Columbian (4-6)

As I noted last week, I was in Sandusky as the Tornadoes took one on the chin to Perkins, 42-7. Columbian gave up three touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the game, but then actually played pretty even over the next two quarters before the Pirates scored a couple touchdowns to enforce the running clock. I've said it a couple times this year, but I personally think Columbian is better than an under .500 team. All six of Columbian's losses came to playoff teams including teams like Bishop Watterson, Perkins, and Chardon. If you replace Bishop Watterson and Chardon on the schedule (I believe Chardon is coming off next year), the Tornadoes are 6-4 and possibly even hosting a playoff game. Against Perkins, Masen Seitz ran 30 times for 160 yards while Zach Shawberry threw a touchdown pass on a beautiful fake that had the Pirates' defense completely fooled. For the season, Shawberry has completed 93-of-193 passes for 1,236 yards and 12 touchdowns while Seitz has racked up 162 carries for 969 yards and 10 scores. Johnny Bremyer caught that touchdown pass against Perkins and now has 33 receptions for 628 yards and eight TDs. As the No. 14 seed, Columbian will travel to No. 3 Cleveland Benedictine to begin the playoffs. The Bengals are 8-2 with a loss to a team from New York and one-possession loss to Walsh Jesuit (10-0). Columbian will likely look to manage the clock with Seitz and need to play clean football to have any chance of pulling the upset.

Up next: at Cleveland Benedictine (8-2) in Division III, Region 10 playoffs

Calvert (6-4)

The Senecas looked to be spoiler last week when they host Hopewell-Loudon, but the Chieftains took care of business, 26-0. That is the third time this season Calvert has been shut out and fifth time the Senecas have scored 10 points or less in a game this season. Tucker Coleman was just 5-of-16 for 34 yards and two interceptions against the Chieftains while Cal Warnament ran 13 times for 57 yards. Hopewell-Loudon controlled the game from the start. Calvert's defense has been pretty good this year though too. The Senecas have kept opponents to 10 points or less six times. The problem is Calvert lost two of those games by identical 10-0 scores to Gibsonburg and Margaretta. The Senecas have to find a little bit of offensive consistently if they want to make a run in these playoffs. For the season, Coleman is 75-of-146 passing for 1,019 yards and 10 touchdowns while Warnament has 175 carries for 1,117 yards and 13 touchdowns. The top receiver is Logan Demoss with 25 receptions for 420 yards. Calvert is the No. 7 seed in Division VII, Region 26, and will host Hardin Northern (6-4) to open the postseason. The Polar Bears had a five-game winning streak earlier this season, but lost three out of their last four to limp into the postseason as the No. 10 seed. Again, if Calvert can score a couple touchdowns and play defense the way it has numerous times, the Senecas should be in a position to win this game and advance.

Hopewell-Loudon (9-0)

The Chieftains made it five-straight Sandusky Bay Conference River Division titles when they beat Calvert, 26-0, last week. Hopewell-Loudon had already clinched a share, but won it outright. I was there in 2020 during the COVID-19 stricken season when the Chieftains beat Tiffin Calvert in a 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon game to win the first of these in a row and H-L has been almost unbeatable since. Brian Colatruglio is probably the top coach in the area, now with over 200 wins in a great career. But, the Chieftains want to rack up a few more W's before this season ends. For the year, Jacoby Ellis has completed 95-of-142 passes for 1,150 yards and 10 touchdowns while Braylon Martinez has 120 rushes for 787 yards and 16 touchdowns. Kellen Frankart has become quite the unique player for Hopewell-Loudon, throwing the ball a little bit, while adding a second rushing option for the Chieftains. He is now 23-of-34 passing for 283 yards and five TDs while running 96 times for 487 yards and five more touchdowns. That's another great option for Colatruglio in many different areas of the offense. Hopewell-Loudon is the No. 1 seed in Division VI, Region 22 and for the second time this season, will face Margaretta, the No. 16 seed. The teams met Sept. 27 in Castalia in the wicked rainstorm that swept across Ohio that night. The Polar Bears led 7-0 in the third quarter before H-L woke up and won 16-7. Margaretta has played significantly better since an 0-4 start, beating Woodmore and Calvert with the close loss to H-L and an overtime road loss to Gibsonburg. With the weather pretty clear and cool, will Hopewell-Loudon flex its muscles or are we in for another close game?

Up next: vs. Margaretta (4-6) in Division VI, Region 22 playoffs

Seneca East (6-4)

The Tigers were on the wrong end of a 21-13 home loss to Mohawk in what became a Northern 10 Athletic Conference championship game. Seneca East had the ball late with a chance to possibly tie, but an interception by Mohawk's Kahne Hayman ended the Tigers' hope of a league title. How Seneca East bounces back will come quickly as the Tigers make the trip to Western Reserve to open the postseason. For the year, Nicholas Parks has completed 140-of-240 passes for 2,316 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Seneca East averages 156 yards per game on the ground, but there is no real clear cut top runner. Parks leads the team with 432 yards on the season on 109 carries while Jackson Gayheart adds 95 carries for 423 yards. Both have four rushing touchdowns on the ground. The top receivers continue to be Taylor Young with 56 receptions for 959 yards and 11 TDs while Bryler Beamer has 43 catches for 769 yards and seven scores. Western Reserve will be a tough contest for the Tigers. The Roughriders scored 34 or more points six times this season. Western Reserve started out 5-1 including a win over conference co-champ Norwalk St. Paul, but went just 2-2 over the last four weeks to just barely host this game. I really think this will be a good one and kind of wish I could be there for this one. Of note, the winner of this faces the Hopewell-Loudon vs. Margaretta winner. If H-L wins, it would be in Bascom.

Up next: at Western Reserve (7-3) in Division VI, Region 22 playoffs

Mohawk (8-2)

The Warriors answered the bell after the loss to Upper Sandusky, first beating Carey, and then going to Attica and defeating Seneca East to win the Northern 10 Athletic Conference championship outright. Mohawk was picked FIFTH in the preseason media football poll, just ahead of Upper Sandusky, who was picked sixth. Kudos to coach Eric Daniel and his staff for really turning this team around. I think we knew they were solid when they went to the buzzer with Calvert, but the 35-7 destruction of Colonel Crawford on the road in Week 4 really set these Warriors on the path to a great season. With all due respect to some of the other players, Ben Bogner has to be the Player of the Year in the N-10. So far, he has completed 106-of-185 passes for 1,818 yards with 23 touchdowns and three interceptions. That's nearly an 8-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. That's absurd for a high school player. He also has 133 carries for 913 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. He's carried this team, especially in games where Kahne Hayman and Kaleb Bish were out. Hayman is back and up to 48 receptions for 828 yards nine touchdowns. Mohawk is the No. 4 seed in the Region 26 playoffs and will host No. 13 Edgerton. The Bulldogs like to score points, tallying 26 or more points eight times, but the two times they didn't, they were shut out. That includes last week's 24-0 loss to Tinora. I don't think Edgerton has a great win - the best is over 7-3 Paulding - so hopefully the Warriors' schedule will prove to be the difference. Mohawk can't commit penalties and expect things to go smoothly. If Mohawk wins, it would host either Edon or McComb in Week 12.
