CAREY 58, MOHAWK 42

CAREY — Carey’s Rachel Reinhart nailed five three-pointers, and the Blue Devils opened the second half on a 13-0 run that created an insurmountable lead on their way to a 58-42 home win over Mohawk last night.
“The first part of the game, we came out a little flat,” Carey coach Keith O’Flaherty said. “Mohawk was pumped up and ready to play…they just had a little more intensity than we did…We had a big third quarter there.”
The first quarter was close throughout with the Blue Devils jumping to a 4-0 lead with Riley Yost and Bella Phoenix each dribble penetrating into the lane for buckets on their first two possessions.
The Warriors scored on their next three possessions to take a 5-4 lead thanks to Allison Russell making one-of-two free throws, an Aubrey Gottfried bucket, and a couple free throws by Katie Woodland.
Emily Brodman made a free throw, and a Yost assist to Phoenix helped the Carey regain the lead, 7-5.
Mohawk’s Allison Russell found Anna Russell inside for an assist to tie things back up.
That’s when Rachel Reinhart knocked down her first three. Reinhart then stole the ball and then assisted Yost in getting some points to push Carey’s lead to the biggest in the quarter, 12-7.
Chloe Miller knocked a couple free throws down, and Gottfried tossed it out to Anna Russell on back-to-back Warrior possessions to get within a point of Carey.
Brodman found Rachel Reinhart on the left wing for her second trey of the evening.
Mohawk’s Woodland would not be deterred as she hit a pair of free throws after being fouled in the lane.
The teams traded baskets back-and-forth in the final minute to give Carey a 19-17 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Brodman made a jumper, assisted by Eliza Weinandy, only for the Warriors’ Gottfried to score in the paint.
The teams went scoreless for a couple minutes until the Blue Devils’ Brodman stole the ball and passed to Autumn Boullion who then passed Rachel Reinhart. Reinhart took the opportunity to make her third three of the game.
Later, Gottfried stole the ball and drove the length of the court before being fouled by Brodman as she made a shot in the lane. Gottfried converted the and-one to get Mohawk within two, 24-22.
A Gottfried defensive rebound kicked out to Anna Russell who then kicked it back to Gottfried for another inside bucket tied the game up.
Carey’s Bouillion then threw the ball inside to Trinity Reinhart, who then put the ball up-and-in for the score.
About a minute of clock ticked away before Jaedynn Hamilton ted the game back up for the Warriors. Woodland then stole the ball from Carey, and Gottfried put back a Mohawk miss on the fast break to take the their first lead since midway through the first quarter.
It was a 28-26 game in favor of Mohawk at the half.
That’s when Carey went on their run.
Yost dished it to Rachel Reinhart for her fourth trifecta to start the second half.
Brodman made one-of-two free throws before grabbing a defensive board at the other end. Rylie Stoops dribbled to the basket, was fouled while making her shot attempt, and then hit her free throw to complete the and-one opportunity for the sophomore.
Back-to-back Raegan Kessler steals ended with Kessler completed an and-one of her own and then a fast break bucket.
A Phoenix steal led to her assisting Stoops on a fast break bucket.
Mara Lease’s three-pointer ended the run and the scoring in the third quarter, Carey was up 45-35. The Devils won the quarter, 19-7.
Carey continued playing well in the fourth with Kessler finding Trinity Reinhart down low for easy points.
Woodland showed some spirit when she dribble penetrated into the lane for a short two.
After Yost hit a midrange jumper, Carey got the ball back, and Stoops got it right back to Yost for an assist-and-score.
Mohawk fed the ball in to Gottfried for some easy points to help slow down the Devils’ offensive run.
A minute or so later, Yost passed to Reinhart, who knocked her fifth-and-final triple to put Carey up by 15 with under four minutes remaining in the game.
Gottfried made the first-of-two free throws after being fouled in the lane. Allison Russell rebounded the second shot for the Warriors to keep the ball. Woodland was able to knock down Mohawk’s final points of the game.
Carey’s Brodman scored on back-to-back possessions to finish out the scoring in the competition.
“Like I told the girls in the locker room, they had an amazing first half,” Mohawk coach Natasha Mullholand said. “At the end of the game, it just comes down to heart.”
Aside from Rachel Reinhart’s 15 points, Brodman finished with 11 for the Devils.
Mohawk’s Gottfried led her team with 14 points.
Carey improves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Northern 10 Conference play. Mohawk is now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the N10.
