ATTICA — Carey went on a 13-4 run to end the first half and start the third quarter to take the lead over Seneca East, 33-29. The Blue Devils never trailed from there, rolling to a 62-53 Northern 10 Conference victory on the road.

What did Coach Bame say?

“We kind of went to more of an open offense with passing and cutting against the zone rather than just kind of stationary," Carey coach Zach Bame said. "We were really stationary the first half, and I thought that hurt us.”

The win avenges a 72-51 home loss for Carey against Seneca East earlier in the season on Dec. 12.

Carey's Kyler Boes on the win...

"Losing at home's not fun. It never is," Carey junior Kyler Boes said to Heart of Ohio Sports' Nate Mullins after the game. "After that, and the first nine losses that we had at the beginning of the season. Just something changed. At locker room, practice, it just flipped and everyone was like 'we're gonna do it'. We just pushed ourselves, and it came together tonight"

The run started when Carey’s Brayden Kitzler nailed a three-pointer on the right wing to go into the half down 25-23.

HALFTIME: Seneca East 25, Carey 23

The Blue Devils’ Kyler Boes then made a jumper from the free throw line to tie the game at 25-all. The Tigers’ Luke Bordner matched Boes with a jumper from the foul line on his team’s next possession.

Carey (4-9 overal, 4-4 N10) responded with a Boes three from the right wing and a Kitzler three from the top of the key before Seneca East’s Justin Reiter made a basket inside the lane.

Boes made another jumper to cap the run for the Devils.

The Tigers’ Beamer flipped the ball over his head for an inside layup to get his team within two points.

Carey sophomore Tripp Phoenix converted a layup, but Reiter answered for Seneca East with an inside basket.

Stone then found Boes open for another three-point shot to extend the Blue Devils’ lead to five.

The Tigers’ Reiter scored on back-to-back trips down the floor to get within one point, but unfortunately for his team, Carey’s Phoenix hit a short jumper to stop any possible run.

Seneca East’s Mason sank two shots from the charity stripe before the Devils’ Carter Bame made a trey to end the third quarter with a 43-39 lead for the Blue & White.

The fourth quarter...

Reiter made a midrange jumper from the left baseline for the Tigers to start the fourth quarter scoring, but Carey’s Stone answered with a close bank shot.

The Orange & Black’s Mason made a hook shot inside, but Kitzler made a three followed by a converted and-one opportunity by Eli Steen pushed Carey’s lead to eight with six minutes remaining in the competition.

Mason hit a floater to stop lessen the gap for Seneca East (10-5, 6-4).

Halfway through the final period, Steen scored on a nice post move in the paint to give the Devils a 53-45 lead.

A couple Mason free throws got the Tigers as close as six points, the closest they’d get the remainder of the night.

From there, Steen converted another and-one opportunity for Carey.

The teams traded single foul shots before Steen ended the streak and converted both foul shots to push the Blue Devils’ lead to 59-50.

Free throws by Steen, Kitzler, and Boes for Carey while Mason hit a final three from the left wing for Seneca East rounded out the scoring in the game.

The beginning of the game...

From the beginning, each team’s leading scorer came out blazing.

Carey’s Boes, who led the Blue Devils with 24 points, made a three-pointer from the left wing to start the scoring. The Tigers’ Luke Mason, who led all scorers with 28 points, responded back with his own three from the right wing to even the score.

Seneca East’s Bryler Beamer made a free throw before Carey’s Bryce Puckett made a midrange jumper from the baseline to give the Devils the lead again.

A couple minutes later, Boes hit a second three from the left wing to push Carey to a four-point lead. The Tigers’ Mason made a baseline lay-up then a three from the right corner on back-to-back possessions to help his team regain the lead, 9-8.

That’s when the Blue Devils’ Chase Mullholand hit a trey for another lead change. This lead stuck for the remainder of the quarter as Phoenix threw a quick pass inside to Chase Stone for an easy bucket for the Blue & White.

Seneca East’s Bordner made a three at the buzzer to make it a 13-12 score in favor of Carey after the first period.

The second quarter...

A minute into the second quarter, the Tigers’ Taylor Young scored on a layup only to be answered by a jumper in the paint by the Devils’ Boes.

A Border foul shot for Seneca East tied the game at 15-all with five minutes remaining in the first half.

The ensuing possession, Carey’s Phoenix converted a bucket in the lane. The Tiger’s Beamer made a couple free throws to tie the game back up.

Then, the Devils’ Kitzler knocked down a three from the left wing. The Orange & Black’s Mason made a right-handed layup, a three-pointer from the right wing, and another from the left corner over a three-minute span that gave his team a 25-20 lead.

That’s when Carey went on their mid-game run and kept their foot on the gas.

Aside from Boes, the Devil’s Kitzler had 13 points on the night and the Tigers’ Reiter finished with 11 points.

Carey won the junior varsity contest, 32-25.
