Welcome back to another edition of the Heart of Ohio Sports Observer.

Here we are. We are already at Week 9 of the high school football season. Things are winding down, but conference races are staying hot.

Can Columbian knock off a rival to set up a massive contest Week 10 at Frost-Kalnow? Will Hopewell-Loudon get any help to get a share of a league title?

What in the world is going to happen in the Northern 10? Could it be any tighter there? Are we looking at a three-way split? Can someone win it outright?

Just a reminder that just the top 12 teams in each region make the playoffs this year, as opposed to 16 the last few years. If you're one of the top 4 seeds, you'll get a bye in Week 11 and host a playoff game in Week 12.

Check out each entry to see where the five HOOS teams sit in their playoff regions ahead of Week 9.

Here's a look at the five Heart of Ohio Sports teams, starting with Columbian.

Columbian (4-4, 2-0)

As someone that has seen Bellevue play a few times this season, I was not surprised the Redmen showed some fight and the rivalry contest between the Tornadoes and Bellevue came down to the final few minutes. Columbian led 14-0 at halftime, but the Redmen stormed back for a 21-14 victory. With any luck, this will be a tremendous rivalry for a long time as Judd Lutz for Columbian and Alex Shepherd for Bellevue are pretty young coaches. Logan Gooding completed 7 of 18 passes for 134 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against the Redmen. Columbian did get Masen Seitz back from a four-game absence due to injury, but he had just four rushes for 17 yards and a fumble. Columbian wasn't really able to get its running game going, finishing with 15 rushes for 81 yards. That's more than five yards a carry, which is good, but that's less than four carries a quarter. A lot of that had to do with Bellevue and quarterback Ike Brown. For the season, Gooding is 106 of 180 passing for 1,479 yards, 15 touchdowns and two interceptions. Brock Siesel does lead the team with 64 rushes for 255 yards and four touchdowns while Seitz has 57 carries for 252 yards and three touchdowns. It will be interesting to see what Lutz does with those two running backs this week against Clyde. Speaking of the Fliers, they have won two games in a row and there is a window for Clyde to win at least a share of the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division title. It starts with beating Columbian this week, though. Johnathan Lantz has completed 125 of 206 passes for 1,394 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions for Clyde. Adam Young has amassed 130 carries for 585 yards and nine touchdowns. He scored four touchdowns in the Fliers' 40-7 win over Sandusky last week. Last year, Clyde defeated Columbian 33-14.

This week: vs. Clyde (3-5, 1-1)

Playoff position: No. 15 in Division III, Region 10

Calvert (3-5, 2-3)

Not much went right last week for the Senecas in a 56-14 home loss to Margaretta. The Polar Bears, who are up to No. 4 in the Division VI rankings, are on an absolute roll the past several weeks and Calvert got to see it up close and personal. Tucker Coleman completed 15 of 27 passes for 158 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions against Margaretta while Nolan Lee had 12 rushes for 33 yards. I don't think I've seen a team fluctuate so much in the region standings as Calvert. Two weeks ago, I believe they were No. 15. Last week they were No. 8. Now, they're on the outside looking in at No. 14. For the season, Coleman is 25 of 46 passing for 337 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions. He has been the starter the past few weeks after taking over for Charlie Palm, who has completed 65 of 119 passes for 726 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions. Lee has 130 carries for 557 yards and nine touchdowns. Logan Demoss leads the receivers with 28 catches for 559 yards and eight touchdowns. Things do not get any easier this week with a trip to the city of Elmore to take on Woodmore. The Wildcats are led by Landon Rich, who has 179 carries for 1,585 yards and 27 touchdowns. Stopping Rich will be priority No. 1 for Calvert. He can lead a team to a victory himself. Calvert pummeled Woodmore last season, 51-21.

This week: at Woodmore (6-2, 3-2)

Playoff position: No. 14 in Division VII, Region 26

Hopewell-Loudon (7-1, 4-1)

The Chieftains got back to their winning ways with a 54-6 road win against Willard. Hopewell-Loudon needed something positive to shake the close Week 7 loss to Margaretta out of its minds and got it against a reeling Willard team. Jacoby Ellis completed 7 of 9 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns while Jaysin Cramer and Brody Brickman each ran for a touchdown. Brickman caught two passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Sam Humphrey got some backup time at quarterback. He completed a pair of passes for 18 yards, but ran five times for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Willard has lost six games in a row since starting 2-0 and played its first game since coach Bill Speller resigned. For the season, Ellis is 75 of 109 passing for 977 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. Cramer leads the ground game with 75 rushes for 509 yards and seven touchdowns while injured Kellen Frankart (65-353-3) and Brickman (51-314-6) have been great options as well. Brickman is the leading receiver with 27 catches for 419 yards and 10 touchdowns while Jack Colatruglio has caught 25 passes for 352 yards and five touchdowns. Hopewell-Loudon returns back home to take on Northwood, a team that likes to run and gun. The Rangers have played games of 44-36 (win), 56-42 (win), 53-32 (win), 48-32 (loss) and 61-34 (loss) this year. As a team, Northwood has compiled 361 rushes for 2,145 yards and 28 touchdowns this season. Skyler Rita is the leading rusher with 110 attempts for 520 yards and seven touchdowns. With Northwood new to the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division, these two teams did not play last year.

This week: vs. Northwood (3-5, 1-4)

Playoff position: No. 3 in Division VI, Region 22

Mohawk (7-1, 4-1)

The Warriors finished up a four-game stretch where they were heavy favorites when they defeated Upper Sandusky 31-6 last week. Once Mohawk lost to Colonel Crawford in Week 4, it knew it needed help to get back in the league race and had to take care of business before this week's game against Carey. The Warriors did their part, but also have a shot at the Northern 10 Athletic Conference title now that the Blue Devils knocked off Colonel Crawford just last week. Now, Carey sits atop of the league standings at 5-0 while Mohawk and Colonel Crawford are both 4-1. Colonel Crawford finishes the season with Upper Sandusky and Wynford, so the Eagles are likely in the clubhouse with one league loss. Mohawk has a chance to make things interesting against Carey this week and Seneca East next week. Carey wraps up league play next week with Bucyrus, meaning the Blue Devils can almost wrap up the league title this week against Mohawk. Andon Clouse has completed 68 of 102 passes for 1,261 yards, 14 touchdowns and one interception for the Warriors. Kaden Bish has racked up 94 rushes for 940 yards and 17 touchdowns for Mohawk while Clouse has 108 carries for 680 yards and nine touchdowns. Brant Kirian leads the receivers with 30 receptions for 515 yards and six touchdowns. Carey has won five games in a row since starting 0-3 (to teams that enter Week 9 a combined 22-2). The Blue Devils are led by their ground game with Mace Puckett having 136 rushes for 771 yards and four touchdowns. Dash Puckett has 62 carries for 646 yards and six touchdowns. Last season, Mohawk topped Carey 27-14.

This week: at Carey (5-3, 5-0)

Playoff position: No. 5 in Division VI, Region 26

Seneca East (5-3, 3-2)

The Tigers responded to its Week 7 thumping loss to Colonel Crawford by pounding Buckeye Central 56-8 last week. It's never fun to lose like Seneca East did to Colonel Crawford, but the Tigers didn't let one loss turn into two. Seneca East enters Week 9 at No. 8 in the Region 22 rankings, right on line for a home game. Let's be honest, the Tigers will likely take care of business against Bucyrus this week, which will help Seneca East's hope of being at home in Week 11. That will set up a big game in Week 10 against Mohawk, which as we've mentioned, plays a massive, emotional game at Carey this week. Nicholas Parks has completed 84 of 153 passes for 1,195 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions for Seneca East. He also leads the Tigers with 122 carries for 525 yards and six touchdowns. Jackson Gayheart has 87 rushes for 479 yards and four touchdowns. Elijah Cline has quietly scored five touchdowns on the ground for Seneca East. Ethan Shultz leads a pack of six receivers with at least 10 receptions. Shultz has 21 catches for 269 yards and three touchdowns. Jaron Depinet (12 catches, 313 yards) and Gunner Polachek (10-209) have each caught three touchdowns as well. Bucyrus has lost six games in a row. Isaac Makeever is 111 of 244 passing for 1,242 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions while running 145 times for 481 yards and six touchdowns for the Redmen. Wyatt Makeever adds 72 carries for 334 yards and six touchdowns. Seneca East topped Bucyrus last year 59-6.

This week: vs. Bucyrus (1-7, 0-5)

Playoff position: No. 8 in Division VI, Region 22
