Welcome back to another edition of the Heart of Ohio Sports Observer.

Is it late August or early October with this weather? I remember the opening night of the season when Mohawk hosted Calvert, it was 66 and rainy. It is expected to be almost 90 degrees the next few days before a cooldown next week. Weird weather, but I'll take it.

Four of the five HOOS teams picked up big wins last week while Calvert struggled against a run-heavy Gibsonburg offense.

We're reached Week 7, but there are some massive games coming up this week, as well as the final few weeks of the regular season.

Just a reminder that just the top 12 teams in each region make the playoffs this year, as opposed to 16 the last few years. If you're one of the top 4 seeds, you'll get a bye in Week 11 and host a playoff game in Week 12.

Check out each entry to see where the five HOOS teams sit in their playoff regions ahead of Week 7.

Here's a look at the five Heart of Ohio Sports teams, starting with Columbian.

Columbian (3-3, 1-0)

The Tornadoes made the trip to Sandusky last week and just squeaked out a win over Sandusky, 28-20. The Blue Streaks have just one win, but are right on the cusp of putting something together. Thankfully for Columbian, it didn't come last Friday. Logan Gooding completed 9 of 18 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown against Sandusky. Daelan Brandeberry caught five passes for 108 yards while Johnny Bremyer had a 49-yard touchdown catch. Brock Siesel ran 15 times for 53 yards and a pair of scores. Columbian continues to play without Masen Seitz at running back. For the season, Gooding is 78 of 133 passing for 1,096 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception. Bremyer leads the receivers with 28 catches for 443 yards and five touchdowns while Dashawn Russell has 23 receptions for 235 yards and four touchdowns. Brandeberry is up to 14 catches for 297 yards and two touchdowns. Seitz still leads Columbian with 53 rushes for 235 yards and three touchdowns, but Siesel has amassed 150 yards on 42 carries for three touchdowns. The Tornadoes hit the road for the final time in the regular season with a trip to Contractors Stadium in Norwalk to take on the Truckers. Norwalk enters on a high after knocking off Vermilion last week in Sandusky Bay Conference crossover action. Norwalk quarterback Brady Singer has completed 24 of 51 passes for 189 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.  AJ Weilnau has 52 rushes for 175 yards and a touchdown while Gavin Lepley has 18 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Tornadoes could get something going here, having won its last two games and facing Bellevue and Clyde the next two weeks. Columbian defeated Norwalk last year, 47-20.

This week: at Norwalk (2-4, 0-0)

Playoff position: No. 17 in Division III, Region 10

Calvert (2-4, 1-2)

Things didn't go well for the Senecas in a 42-6 home loss to Gibsonburg last week. There are some serious questions for Calvert with four games to go. Last week, Tucker Coleman came in on relief at quarterback of Charlie Palm, completing 4 of 10 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. Coleman was the quarterback last year when Calvert won seven games, including a first-round playoff game. Is Coleman the answer at quarterback? Palm is now 65 of 119 for 726 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. Nolan Lee leads the rushing game with 85 rushes for 323 yards and five touchdowns. Coleman actually paces the Senecas with 18 catches, but it's for just 119 yards. Logan DeMoss has a team-high 345 yards receiving on 16 catches with four touchdowns. Calvert better have its defense ready this week on a road trip to Northwood. The Rangers have scored at least 44 points in each of their three wins. Northwood quarterback Tyler Osley has completed 31 of 69 passes for 623 yards with six touchdowns, but the Rangers like to run the ball. As a team, Northwood has 282 rushes for 1,626 yards and 22 touchdowns. Osley has 62 rushes for 339 yards and three touchdowns, but Skyler Rita (79-324-5), Jason St. Claire (45-356-3) and DeAndre Curry (37-230-6) are all solid options. These two teams did not play last year, as it is Northwood's first year in the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division.

This week: at Northwood (3-3, 1-2)

Playoff position: No. 15 in Division VII, Region 26

Hopewell-Loudon (6-0, 3-0)

The Chieftains just kept things rolling with a 34-7 road win at Lakota last week. Jacoby Ellis completed 13 of 16 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns while Jaysin Cramer ran 14 times for 106 yards and a touchdown. Brody Brickman added 11 carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Brickman also caught both touchdown passes among his four catches for 34 yards. Jack Colatruglio had seven catches for 82 yards. Much like Columbian, Hopewell-Loudon continues to play without its top back in Kellen Frankart. But as I mentioned last week, the Chieftains just shift a couple players around and don't miss a beat. For the season, Ellis is 57 of 85 for 696 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. Cramer tops Hopewell-Loudon with 357 yards on 58 carries with four touchdowns while Frankart has totaled 65 rushes for 353 yards and three touchdowns. Brickman has 23 catches for 290 yards and eight touchdowns while Colatruglio adds 17 catches for 281 yards and four touchdowns in five games. Business will pick up this week for Hopewell-Loudon, who is ranked No. 2 in Division VI in the latest state poll. The Chieftains welcome Margaretta to Bascom for the second year in a row. The Polar Bears have won their last five games after a Week 1 21-20 loss to Vermilion. Margaretta likes to run the ball. Quarterback Jake Bouy has completed 19 of 35 passes for 472 yards and four touchdowns while running 35 times for 301 yards and eight touchdowns. Judah Keller tops Margaretta with 70 carries for 609 yards and nine touchdowns with Tyson Bailey adding 39 rushes for 283 yards and a touchdown. Hopewell-Loudon won 16-7 at Margaretta last year before pounding the Polar Bears 43-8 at home in the first round of the playoffs.

This week: vs. Margaretta (5-1, 2-0)

Playoff position: No. 1 in Division VI, Region 22

Mohawk (5-1, 2-1)

For the second week in a row, the Warriors took care of business. After defeating Buckeye Central two weeks ago, Mohawk dispatched Bucyrus 48-0. I talked a few weeks ago how the Warriors would be heavy favorites over a three-game stretch and so far, Mohawk has been in top shape. The Warriors are a game back in the league standings at 2-1 with Colonel Crawford and Carey both 3-0. Mohawk actually becomes Seneca East fans this week and Carey fans next week as the Warriors need someone to beat Colonel Crawford to even have a chance at the league title. For the season, Andon Clouse has completed 48 of 72 passes for 919 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception while running 76 times for 514 yards and nine touchdowns. Kaden Bish continues to establish himself as one of the top running backs in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference with 65 carries for 633 yards and 10 touchdowns. Brant Kirian leads the receivers with 22 catches for 334 yards and five touchdowns. Mohawk will again be a favorite this week when it hosts Wynford, whom has lost its last four games, allowing at least 44 points each time. Braden Campbell has completed just 37 of 85 passes for 388 yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions this season for the Royals. Bryce Locker leads Wynford's ground game with 84 carries for 510 yards and three touchdowns. Mohawk defeated Wynford last year, 31-13.

This week: vs. Wynford (1-5, 0-3)

Playoff position: No. 5 in Division VI, Region 26

Seneca East (4-2, 2-1)

The Tigers did what they had to last week in a 35-14 road win over Upper Sandusky. Seneca East is hanging around in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference league race at 2-1, but will get quite the challenge this week. More on that in a minute. Seneca East lost a tough one to Carey two weeks ago in the final minute, so bouncing back with a win over Upper Sandusky, whom had defeated Wynford the week before, was a nice night for the Tigers. For the season, Nicholas Parks has completed 70 of 127 passes for 868 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He has rushed 105 times for 467 yards and six touchdowns. Jackson Gayheart adds 69 carries for 339 yards and two touchdowns while Ethan Shultz leads Seneca East with 19 catches for 159 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers travel to North Robinson to take on Colonel Crawford. The Eagles are No. 10 in Division VI in the latest state poll and have defeated Buckeye Central (42-8) and Bucyrus (48-0) the last two weeks after the win over Mohawk. Colonel Crawford has run 175 times for 1,344 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. Connor McMichael leads the way with 81 rushes for 537 yards and eight touchdowns while Roen Throw has 28 carries for 265 yards and six touchdowns. Last season, Colonel Crawford topped Seneca East, 21-20.

This week: at Colonel Crawford (6-0, 3-0)

Playoff position: No. 6 in Division VI, Region 22

KYLE HOLSINGER'S GAMES OF THE WEEK

By Kyle Holsinger

I read your comments and tweaked the analytics a bit. Now, the metrics are 40% competitiveness, 20% rankings, 20% combined wins, and 20% college prospects. I personally think watching some D-I prospects balling out makes for a great game—even if the game doesn’t end up close. If games ending with slim point differential is your preference then I’ll give y’all what you want. Enjoy!
