Welcome back to another edition of the Heart of Ohio Sports Observer.

Just like that, we are halfway through the regular season. Wasn't it just Week 1 a few minutes ago?

Local teams continue to do well. All five have put themselves in a spot to make the playoffs, but wins are needed in the back half of the season to solidify spots.

Columbian starts Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division play this week while the other four have been in league play for a bit.

A kind reminder that just the top 12 teams in each region make the playoffs this year, as opposed to 16 the last few years. If you're one of the top 4 seeds, you'll get a bye in Week 11 and host a playoff game in Week 12.

Next week, we will start noting where our five teams sit in their regions after Week 6.

Want to know more? Keep reading!

Here's a look at the five Heart of Ohio Sports teams, starting with Columbian.

Columbian (2-3)

The Tornadoes got a much-needed win last week, topping Huron, 16-13. Columbian trailed 13-0 at halftime, one week after the 81-7 loss to Bishop Watterson. But, the Tornadoes dominated the second half and shut down a potent Huron offense to pick up the victory. Against the Tigers, Logan Gooding completed 12 of 24 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. Brock Kiesel topped Columbian's ground game with 16 rushes for 72 yards and a touchdown. For the season, Gooding is 69 of 115 passing for 925 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception. Masen Seitz leads the Tornadoes with 53 rushes for 235 yards and three touchdowns, but hasn't played the last two weeks. Johnny Bremyer has 27 catches for 394 yards and four touchdowns with Dashawn Russell adding 20 receptions for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Columbian faces Sandusky this week. The Blue Streaks continue to struggle on the defensive side of the ball. Sandusky has allowed at least 44 points in each of its four losses, including a 44-6 drubbing by Vermilion last week. Dale Johnson has completed 28 of 79 passes for 487 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions this season and leads the team with 109 yards rushing. Sandusky is averaging just 57.4 yards rushing per game. Columbian travels to Sandusky this week and Norwalk next week before finishing the season with three straight home games. Last year, Sandusky clubbed Columbian, 41-13.

This week: at Sandusky (1-4)

Calvert (2-3, 1-1)

After losing a fourth-quarter lead to St. Paul and getting kicked around by Hopewell-Loudon over the last two weeks, the Senecas also picked up a much-needed win by topping Lakota 34-7. Calvert led just 14-7 at halftime before dominating the second half. Charlie Palm completed 10 of 17 passes for 114 yards, but the Senecas won the game on the ground. Nolan Lee ran 17 times for 73 yards and three touchdowns while Cameron Lucius added seven rushes for 48 yards and two touchdowns. For the season, Palm has completed 51 of 93 passes for 623 yards with Lee leading Calvert with 80 carries for 308 yards and five touchdowns. The Senecas play at home (Heidelberg's Hoernemann Stadium) for the second straight week this week when it hosts a tough Gibsonburg team. The Golden Bears have already racked up 1,317 yards rushing. Grant Smith leads the way with 97 rushes for 682 yards and nine touchdowns while Aiden Nims has 26 attempts for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Other viable options for Gibsonburg are quarterback Reece Walby (24-222-5) and Aiden Morant (24-161-2). Walby has completed 13 of 31 passes for 234 yards. Gibsonburg defeated Calvert last season, 10-0.

This week: vs. Gibsonburg (3-2, 1-1)

Hopewell-Loudon (5-0, 2-0)

The Chieftains kept rolling along with a 25-0 win over Gibsonburg. Jacoby Ellis completed 6 of 10 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns while Jaysin Cramer ran 15 times for 87 yards and a touchdown and Brody Brickman added 12 rushes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Brickman caught both touchdown passes among his three catches for 27 yards. Hopewell-Loudon played without Kellen Frankart, but coach Brian Colatruglio moved some names around and the Chieftains didn't miss a beat. For the season, Ellis is 44 of 69 passing for 545 yards and 11 touchdowns. Frankart does lead the ground game with 65 rushes for 353 yards and three touchdowns, but Cramer is up to 44 attempts for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Brickman tops Hopewell-Loudon with 19 catches for 256 yards and six touchdowns. Despite playing just four games, Jack Colatruglio adds 10 receptions for 199 yards and four touchdowns. The Chieftains travel down SR 635 to take on Lakota this week. The Raiders are reeling after losses to Woodmore (42-6) and Calvert (34-7) the last two weeks. Quarterback Jalen Wagner was limited last week in the loss to Calvert, allowing Nick Elchert to take most of the snaps. Wagner is 18 of 32 passing for 347 yards and three touchdowns this season while Elchert is 12 of 28 for 89 yards. Last year, Hopewell-Loudon topped Lakota, 30-0.

This week: at Lakota (3-2, 0-2)

Mohawk (4-1, 1-1)

The Warriors bounced back from a Week 4 loss to Colonel Crawford by thumping Bucyrus, 62-7. Mohawk did what it had to do on the road trip to get back to its winning ways instead of allowing one loss to turn into two. As mentioned before, the Warriors will be favorites in some of these midseason games, but have to stay focused and not look toward end of season contests. This year, quarterback Andon Clouse has completed 42 of 62 passes for 765 yards and nine touchdowns. On the ground, Clouse has picked up 471 yards on 70 carries with seven touchdowns. Kaden Bish has been impressive for Mohawk this season, rushing 53 times for 533 yards and eight touchdowns. Brant Kirian is up to 18 catches for 282 yards and three touchdowns while Levi Tiell has caught 11 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns. This week, Mohawk is back at home to take on Buckeye Central. The Bucks have also faced Bucyrus and Colonel Crawford in Northern 10 Athletic Conference play. Buckeye Central defeated Bucyrus 34-13 before falling to the Eagles, 42-8. The Bucks are led by Jack Phillips, who has completed 54 of 97 passes for 600 yards with eight touchdowns while rushing 56 times for 317 yards and four touchdowns. Austin Bogner adds 91 carries for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Mohawk blitzed Buckeye Central last season, 48-0.

This week: vs. Buckeye Central (3-2, 1-1)

Seneca East (3-2, 1-1)

The Tigers were on the wrong end of a tight 20-14 league loss to Carey last week. Seneca East is one of four Northern 10 Athletic Conference teams that are now 1-1 in the league with Carey and Colonel Crawford both 2-0. There's a lot left to be played for in the league. Getting the win over Carey, especially at home in Attica, would have been huge for the Tigers. But, they didn't and now, must regroup. For the season, Nicholas Parks has completed 55 of 100 passes for 686 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He has rushed 84 times for 348 yards and three touchdowns while Jackson Gayheart has 51 carries for 256 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Shultz leads Seneca East with 17 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown while Gayheart has 10 receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers hit the road this week to take on Upper Sandusky, another one of the 1-1 league teams. The Rams lost 33-7 to Carey, but responded with a 42-20 thumping of Wynford last week. Keegan Dunn has completed 47 of 91 passes for 578 yards and six touchdowns for Upper Sandusky. Ethan Lewis leads the Rams' ground game with 85 carries for 409 yards and a touchdown. Josh Heilman has 16 catches for 319 yards and four touchdowns. Last year, Seneca East picked up a 14-7 win over Upper Sandusky.

This week: at Upper Sandusky (2-3, 1-1)

Clay has not beat a team with a winning record yet this season—beating those three teams though by a combined score of 111-9. Their losses were against 5-0 Wapakoneta and a 3-2 Napoleon squad. This the beginning of a tough stretch of games starting with Findlay then at Anthony Wayne (4-1) before hosting Perrysburg (4-1) and Whitmer (4-1).

Intrigue: As stated previously, Margaretta and Woodmore are tied for first in the SBC - River with Hopewell-Loudon. None of those teams have faced each other—until now. The winner still controls their own destiny in the division.

The Tigers defense was led by Ja’Dyn Williams with nine tackles, a fumble recovery, interception, and half a TFL in the win last week. Samuel Dossous made six tackles, 1.5 TFL, a sack, and pass breakup.

Football North plays an incredibly tough schedule—which is how this game was considered with the Chargers having just a 1-3 record. They opened their season with a win against Harrisburg [PA] Bishop McDevitt by a score of 27-7. After that, they’ve lost three straight to the likes of Walsh Jesuit, 30-6; Detroit Catholic Central, 41-28; and last week to St. James Academy in a shootout with a basketball score. Football North faces St. Edward and St. Ignatius later in the season.

#2 Walsh Jesuit (5-0) @ Archbishop Hoban (4-1)

Walsh has not only outscored their five opponents, 146-26, but have done it against some stiff competition: Toledo Central Catholic, Springfield, Football North [ON], St. Ignatius, and Canisius [NY].

Hoban faced three tough opponents to start 2025: beating Harvest Prep, 31-12; losing to Archbishop Spalding [MD], 58-28; and Detroit [MI] King, 23-21. The last two weeks have been easier with Hoban beating Akron East and Brush by a combined score of 97-7.

#1 Elder (5-0) @ St. Xavier (4-1)

When: Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.

Last Week: Elder won at Louisville [KY] St. Xavier, 26-24; St. Xavier lost at Archbishop Moeller, 30-13.

Previous Meeting: Sept. 27, 2024; St. X won at Elder, 22-17.

Intrigue: The other GCL - South matchup.

I almost feel like it appears that I have a GCL - South or Cincinnati bias. That being said, if you question why I pick their games often then I suggest you have your local high school add them to their schedule and see how well they fare. It’s just some of the best football around. You have to be top tier to beat them, and a lot of top talent is on the field.

Elder QB Kaden Estep was 20-of-28 for 225 passing yard, one TD, and one INT with 128 rushing yards and another TD on 15 carries in last week’s victory over Louisville St. Xavier. Receivers Chase Walpole and Jackson Ruth each had six receptions—Walpole with 79 receiving yards and a TD while Ruth had 62 yards.

Defensively, the Panthers Andrew Paff and Aidan Sullivan had seven tackles a piece in the win. Paff also had an interception and one TFL in the contest. Senior DL Jayven Hutchinson had six tackles, 2.5 TFL, and one sack.

Panther senior K Adam Re was 2-of-2 on field goals with the longest being from 31 yards last week.

St. Xavier’s Jackson Frey was 18-for-30 passing for 150 yards, two TDs, and one pick in the loss to Moeller a week ago. Frey was also St. X’s leading rusher with 26 yards on 11 attempts. Cam Taylor and Alex McClatchey each had five catches with Taylor earning 66 receiving yards and McClatchey 28 yards.

Senior DB Brayden Reilly led the Bombers last week with 11 tackles and two TFL. Kobe Clapper made 10 tackles with one pass deflection. McClatchey also snagged an interception on defense.

Honorable Mention - Taft (5-0) @ Withrow (4-1); Bluffton (5-0) @ Lima Central Catholic (5-0); Forestville [MD] Bishop McNamara (2-2) @ St. Edward (4-1); and Northeastern (5-0) @ West Jefferson (5-0).
